There was a time when a conservatory consisted of an awful lot of glass and a space that became almost unusable for large parts of the year. Either too hot or too cold, not welcoming enough when it’s chilly outside and simply sweltering during summer, conservatories became the room no-one dared to enter. But that was then. Modern designs, techniques and materials have emerged to solve a whole range of niggling problems that once put many conservatories out of action for anything other than hanging up the washing or storing the outdoor boots. Today’s up to date, efficient and climate controlled conservatories have become vital living spaces, extra room for the family to spread out, dine, play or socialise, a delightful place to savour the view of the garden in spring, or cosy up on a winter’s evening. So what makes today’s conservatories so much better? Up on the roof Conservatories of the past usually came with a polycarbonate roof, layers of thin plastic with a honeycomb effect that made it strong and durable. Polycarbonate is still a popular feature of today’s conservatories, but is now modernised to come in either bronze or opal finish, and far more efficient than ever. Today’s new conservatory owners aren’t restricted as before – they could opt for a self-cleaning glass roof, or give their conservatory the feel of an ‘extension’ with a solid roof with timber frame, insulation and finished off with slate or tiles. Climate controlled Conservatories once suffered from being too hot or too cold. But today’s conservatories are built with energy efficiency in mind. The latest uPVC and glazing technologies mean they are eco-friendly, with high insulating tinted solar control glass that combines heat reflection and thermal insulation. It means that in winter the glass helps to retain heat and in summer stops it becoming too hot. Energy efficient low-e insulating glass limits the amount of ultraviolet and infrared light that can pass through without affecting the amount of natural light. Got the look Conservatories of old often took their style from the Victorian or Edwardian book of fashion. Today they come in all shapes and sizes, styles and finishes. A gable front conservatory – with its spacious rectangular configuration and pitched room – is an elegant and practical alternative, creating space and drawing light into the home. While P-shaped conservatories open out to provide a wider space at one end, almost creating two separate rooms. Orangeries are a popular alternative to conservatories, more structured and often with roof beams, they typically feature a “lantern” style glass or polycarbonate roof to bathe the room in light. You can build in thermal efficient panels (in a range of colours) to suit your style and help save on fuel costs. A full rainbow of possibilities While once white was the default for all conservatories, now they can be just about any colour your mind can stretch to – inside and out. The options for both doors and panels are extensive, and there’s even the option to have a conservatory coloured on the outside (to match the colour scheme of your house) and white on the inside. Through the door Conservatory doors have evolved too. Modern designs mean you can throw open bi-folding doors to completely open up your conservatory and bring the garden in. Sliding patio doors and French doors – usually two doors which open outwards – now come in a range of finishes to complement your décor and home. It’s Christmas morning in the Jones’ home, Ian and Charlotte had woken early as usual all excited to see what Father Christmas had bought them this year, they had been very good all year, ok, well maybe not all year but at least for the last two weeks, so they hoped they would be on Santa’s good list. They were sat outside their parent’s bedroom listening patiently at the door for any sounds of them waking and then suddenly they heard their Dad yawn, so they both barged, jumped on the bed shouting Merry Christmas. They all went downstairs into their lovely warm lounge and there was the wonderful smell of turkey, that had been cooking all night, Mum went to check on the turkey and Ian and Charlotte raced into the conservatory to check whether Santa had been and were so excited when they saw the big pile of presents waiting for them and Christmas celebrations started. They all sat around the Christmas tree and Mum played Santa handing out the presents, although she did insist on having a cup of tea before, so Ian and Charlotte sat patiently willing her to drink it quickly, Dad got his usual of pants and socks and Mum got chocolates and Ian and Charlotte got most of what they asked Santa for. After dinner, which they all agreed Mum had surpassed herself again this year, Dad cleared the table and while Dad washed up, Ian and Charlotte helped with the drying up, then they all sat back down at the table for the usual Christmas tradition of a family game of Monopoly, Dad got the worn-out box out from under the stairs, this year Dad let Charlotte be the banker, although Mum still won as usual and at 5.30 they were all cuddled up on the sofa ready for Dr Who. When Ian and Charlotte finally went to bed, they all agreed it had been a wonderful day and they were all thinking how different this Christmas was to last year. Last Christmas the house had been so cold and the conservatory was completely unusable because of the cold, and Dad promised them that this year would be different, and it was, so he had contacted Park Lane Windows, Doors & Conservatories who had replaced all the old drafty wooden windows with some lovely energy efficient new uPVC windows and they had also told them about how their sister company Nu-Look Conservatory Roofs could replace their old polycarbonate roof on their conservatory with a nice solid one and they all agreed what a difference it had made. Adding a conservatory to your house can be an easy way to add another room to your home, giving you more living space, whether you are looking to extend to have another reception room, dining room or a family room a conservatory can achieve this more affordably than a house extension and a common question we are asked at Park Lane Windows, Doors & Conservatories is “Do I need planning permission” so hopefully this will help to answer that question. In most circumstances you do not require planning permission to build a new conservatory onto your home, but of course as in most things there are always exceptions. You should not require planning permission: •If your home has not previously had any extensions and the conservatory does not exceed more than half of the size of your house •If including any extensions or other buildings built after your home was originally built by adding a conservatory, no more than half of the area of your original house is exceeded. •If your conservatory does not exceed 3 metres beyond the rear wall of an attached house or 4 metres if a detached house if no extensions or other buildings have been added since the house was built You may need to apply for planning permission: •If the conservatory is being placed on the front or side of your home and is next to a highway •If the conservatory is higher than the highest part of the house •If conservatory is going to be in excess of 4metres high •If you are adding a conservatory to the side of your house if it is on designated land •If you have a listed building you may require listed building consent Please note that these only apply to houses and converted houses or areas where there may be a planning condition or other restriction that limits permitted development rights, this also only applies to England and may vary for other areas.
