Delays, threats and demands for early payment are how the owner operates this business. It was a nightmare, the owner lied to us from the first time he stepped into our house, telling us that all the people were direct employees, the first lot of boys on the job were all subbies! We had people walking off the job because they couldn't cope working for the firm anymore, one boy had a screaming match on the phone with the owner in our house as he hadn't been paid for 2 weeks. We ended up having to go and buy materials as LMB owed money to all the local building suppliers so they wouldn't deliver supplies and the teams that were on site were going to walk off as they couldn't do any work so wouldn't get paid! The owner clearly had financial issues as we were getting demands for payment when the work wasn't complete and if we dared to refuse, we got threatened! It was laughable, one early demand was for installation of the stairs, I was on the phone to the owner saying we wouldn't pay as I was looking at the stairs which were on the pavement outside our house! We weren't happy with the plastering so asked for it to be put right and we would pay when that happened and again we got threats. The worst thing is that we weren't alone, everyone that came on site had horror stories from other sites, from customers being in tears as the scaffolding was taken down when the job want complete because LMB owed the scaffolders money to jobs being subbed out to people that didn't know what they were doing so lofts weren't structaully sound so they had to be taken down. We did our research, got quotes from 3 firms and visited a loft at a previous LMB 'customers' house, George, whom we later found out was the owners business partner! If you do decide to appoint LMB, make sure you have a solicitor on fast dial and we ended up seeking legal advice to try and get the job finalised and LMB and the owner out of our lives.
