This extra insulation is one of the main benefits of double-glazing. A lot of heat is lost through our windows so ensuring they are as efficient as possible is important to keep your home warm and your energy bills down.
Unlike single-glazed windows, double-glazing slows the transfer of heat due to the vacuum between the two panes of glass which can help to keep your home warmer for longer or prevent it from warming too much in the summer.
This in turn lowers your energy bills which makes them a great money-saving investment, especially for those living in very cold areas. Paired with heavy curtains these windows can help to keep your home at a comfortable, consistent temperature all year round.
Another benefit of double glazing is that it can help to reduce noise. This can be very disruptive especially if you live in a busy area. The double-glazed windows help to reduce the amount of noise pollution in the home which allows you to relax and remain undisturbed in your house.
The two layers of glass in double-glazed windows also help to provide an extra layer of security. Breaking through two panes of glass is, obviously, more difficult than breaking through just one and these windows are often reinforced which makes them far more secure.
This makes them an excellent choice not only for your home but for your business or store as well. The added security means you can feel safe and comfortable knowing your property is protected.

Double glazed windows consist of two panels with a pocket of air between them which prevents heat from escaping – or entering- through the glass.
However, as wonderful as double glazing is, there are some issues that may arise. These can usually be fixed however in the event you are unable to find a solution it is very easy to find emergency glazing services to come and take care of your windows.
Condensation is a very common issue in double-glazed windows. This can be due to a lack of ventilation, the age of the window or broken seals on the window. Moisture can become trapped between the panes of glass and cause condensation to build up.
Improving the ventilation of your home can prevent this, however, if the issue is caused by a broken seal you may need to do more in order to fix the problem.
Seals can break for many issues and some of them are difficult to prevent. You may not know a seal is broken on your window unless condensation builds up, but it can also reduce the effectiveness of your double glazing so you may want to look out for this problem.
Luckily, a broken seal isn’t cause for replacing the whole window. The seal itself can be replaced and fixed on its own which helps to save you time and money.
Broken windows are everyone's worst nightmare however this can be remedied as easily as any other problem. If your window is broken you will have to replace it, but there are options available.
In most cases, the glass panes themselves can be replaced instead of the entire window and frame. This makes the job a lot easier and can often be far less expensive.

Moisture in air can have many consequences, but when it is indoors it can lead to condensation on your windows. This is a phenomenon mainly of the colder months, when cold air that seeps through from outside meets water vapour inside and causes it to condense, leaving your inner panes covered in water droplets. This can lead to damp and mould.
There are many ways to tackle this, some more novel than others. For instance, theIrish Mirror has been advising its readers with single-pane windows to take a range of steps to soak up moisture by leaving certain objects close to the windows. This includes jars of rock salt, socks full of cat-litter and a home-made dehumidifier (as if buying a proper one from the shops is the worst idea ever).
It also suggested getting secondary glazing, with cut plastic sheeting to form a gap between the outer window and the atmosphere of the room.
However, it is precisely that effect that can be achieved more completely, permanently and effectively by fitting double glazing in your Brighton home, meaning the cold outside and warm inside are kept apart by the cavity between the panes.
That does not mean double glazing is immune from condensation forming, but it should happen a lot less. If that is not the case, the likely reasons are excessive moisture in the room, very low temperatures or poor circulation. For instance, your bathroom windows will tend to get condensation with all that steam from hot water.
Condensation between the panes can be prevented upon installation and after by avoiding poor sealant or damage to the windows.
At the same time, you can enjoy the other benefits of double glazing such as noise reduction and extra protection against breakage. Your cat may also be happy as you won’t have taken its litter to stuff in a sock.
Casement window This is simply a window that is attached by its hinges to the frame, allowing it to be opened fully. This enables homeowners to get as much air into the property as possible, whereas all other windows only open partially.
Sash windows Sash windows first became popular during the Georgian era, which is why you’ll see many homes from this and the Victorian period fitted with this form of sliding window.
These days, you can install double-glazed sash windows made out of uPVC instead of wood, which are far more energy-efficient than the originals.
Georgian windows Some people prefer to install Georgian-style windows that open outwards instead of upwards like a sash one. These are designed with astragal bar features to make them look authentic but have all the benefits of modern windows.
Tilted windows Homeowners with large or inaccessible windows might prefer a tile and turn style. These open by tilting inwards from the top, not obstructing views from the inside. They are also ideal for high-rise apartments, as they can be opened when little children are around without it being dangerous.

So far this winter, the UK has seen temperatures drop to -10C in some parts of the country, and ice and snow on the ground for days on end. Therefore, after finally thawing out before Christmas, many people will be disappointed to hear the cold weather is making a return.
According to the Met Office, the temperature will drop to minus figures in the northwest of England, north Wales and Northern Ireland this week.
A yellow warning for snow and ice has been issued and frost, ice and snow is expected in Scotland, and north and south-east England.
Thankfully, the icy conditions are not anticipated to last as long as December’s. However, homeowners will still want to make sure their house or flat is as warm as possible during the cold snap.
The best way to do this is by ensuring double-glazed windows are working effectively and there is no damage or deterioration to the panes. They should also check their heating is in working order, their radiators are heating up, and any draughts through windows and doors are blocked.
Energy Saving Trust advises homeowners to consider long-term measures to prevent heat loss. These include cavity wall insulation, floor insulation, roof and loft insulation, insulating tanks, pipes and radiators, and draught proofing.
Get ready for the cold spell by getting your double-glazing in Brighton checked in case it needs repairs.
As a result, high street footfall rose by 4.6 per cent from 2021’s figures, data provider Springboard revealed in The Guardian.
It was also 7.3 per cent higher than on the previous Friday, suggesting many customers headed out to make the most of Black Friday bargains.
High streets experienced the biggest increase over the year, with shopping traffic rising by eight per cent from Black Friday 2021 to 2022. However, footfall in shopping centres grew by 3.6 per cent while they even dropped in retail parks by 1.5 per cent.
Diane Wehrle, insights director at Springboard, said: “The footfall data demonstrates that while trading conditions are challenging, Black Friday is certainly not a disaster.”
She went on to say shoppers were more likely to go to city centres, with footfall in central London increasing by 11.1 per cent from November 18th to Black Friday, just one week later.
The good news for retailers is the festive shopping period is far from over, with Sensormatic predicting December 23rd, the last Friday before Christmas Day, to be the busiest shopping day of 2022, with a considerable number of shoppers leaving their present buying to the last minute this year.
This is according to property maintenance solution provider Help Me Fix, which noted that while bigger projects can add substantial value to a property, they cost significantly more than small updates.
It noted that landscape gardens, for instance, typically cost £3,750 and can boost the asking price by 1.2 per cent. However, for an average property in the UK, this still results in a reduction in profit of £199.
Wine cellars are another expensive investment, costing around £35,000 to fit. However, they only add ten per cent to the value of the home.
According Halifax’s latest House Price Index, the average cost of a property in the UK was £292,598 in October. This means installing a wine cellar will only boost the value by £29,259, meaning homeowners will be short more than £5,000.
Ettan Bazil, chief executive officer of Help Me Fix, told Henley Standard: “If the former [cost] outweighs the latter [value added to the property], your home will certainly sell for more, but your personal profit will still be reduced.”
Other big investments that might seem worthwhile if you are planning to stay in the property for a long time, but not if you are intending to sell soon include fitting a home cinema. This typically costs £15,000 to install. However, it could reduce profit by £12,337.
Many people want to replace their bathtubs with a standalone shower. However, this £2,765 cost will reduce the value of the house by two per cent.
What’s more, while having a loft conversion will appeal to lots of homebuyers who want more room, this will only add 10.8 per cent to the value of the house.
However, they cost on average £37,500, which is nearly 13 per cent of a typical home in the UK. Therefore, property owners can expect to lose £5,542 by extending into their loft.
To maximise profits when selling a home, Mr Bazil suggests making smaller improvements that do not cost as much but are very appealing to potential buyers.
These include fitting a new boiler, fixing the roof, and installing double-glazing. Homebuyers will be very interested in properties that have these energy-saving fittings at the moment, due to the escalating cost of gas and electricity prices.
After March 31st 2023, the Energy Price Guarantee will increase, which means a typical household in the UK will have to pay £3,000 a year, as opposed to the current price of £2,500.
Subsequently, the more energy-efficient a house is, the increased chances of it selling, and the higher asking price it can command.
This is particularly the case as the Energy Price Guarantee will only run until April 2024, after which point households might have to pay the standard, higher rate for their electricity and gas. Therefore, they will want to reduce their energy consumption as much as possible, which can be achieved with new double-glazed windows, boilers, and fixed roofs.
For glazing in Brighton, give us a call today.
With an already capricious weather system subject to the impact of climate change, it is impossible to be sure what will come. However, it is likely based on the experience of recent years that there will be some storms ahead.
Indeed, the Met Office issued a yellow warning for London and the south east for wind for November 24th, advising of a “brief spell of heavy rain and strong, gusty winds”. The main dangers from it were possible flooding of roads and a few homes, as well as dangers to high-sided vehicles in exposed places and on bridges.
None of this is likely to be so severe as to leave anyone needing broken window glass repairs in Brighton , but more powerful storms may do so over the course of the winter.
While the November 24th warning did not feature a named storm, itself an indicator that the weather was not too severe, a whole alphabetical list of monikers has been lined up for any more serious weather events that might hit in the coming weeks and months.
Last winter brought the likes of Storm Dudley and Storm Eunice in quick succession in February, while this year the first named storm will be Antoni. Further down the list will be Betty, Cillian, Daisy, Elliot and Fleur.
How many storms the UK will get remains to be seen and where they will be worst is another unknown. But southern and western coastal areas may be hit hard because they are first in line for anything coming off the Atlantic and storms can lose power gradually over land. Therefore it is quite possible that severe winds, or debris produced by it, could lead to broken windows in Brighton.
When it comes to losing heat from your home, your windows are one of the biggest culprits out there, coming in a close second behind the roof.
Cold spots and draughts can easily make their presence felt and this can make wintertime difficult to withstand, not to mention increasing your energy bills at a time when increasing amounts of pressure are being put on household finances.
The good news is that there’s a lot you can do to improve your window insulation, keeping the heat inside where it belongs.
Firstly, installing double or even triple glazing can make a huge difference to the comfort levels at home and the investment will pay for itself sooner rather than later. You can also help keep the warmth in by hanging thicker curtains and drapes, providing even more insulation - and looking stylish at the same time.
There’s also window insulation film available these days that you can shrink-seal to the window units so they can cling to the frame and seal the seams and any cracks that may have emerged over time. However, this isn’t a permanent solution and you will still experience heat loss if you only go for window film.
You can also use weather sealing strips if you know you’re going to be caught short during a cold snap, but remember that this isn’t a permanent solution either and if your windows are really draughty, you’ll likely want to get them sorted out sooner rather than later.

What’s particularly good about glass is that it can be used both internally and externally, so whatever kind of design ideas you may have, it’s highly likely that they can be brought to fruition if you decide that glass is the way to go.
You may find that glass balustrades are an especially attractive option for various parts of the property. These are glass panels that are intended to be used as a barrier of some kind, occasionally with supporting posts (or balusters) in place.
They can be used for a range of different applications, everything from staircases and balconies to outdoor decking and terraced areas… so if it’s versatility you’re after, you’ll find it with products of this kind.
These days, one of the most appealing aspects of these balustrades is that they deliver an incredibly contemporary look and feel to any and all design schemes. They’re also perfect for creating a seamless and uninterrupted view, making your spaces feel light and airy without much trouble at all.
If you’re keen to maximise the amount of natural light you have bouncing around your various rooms, glass can really help you achieve this. And, of course, you can’t ignore the safety aspects of glass balustrades… nowadays, glass is thick and tempered, so it is very difficult to break.

As wonderful as conservatories are, they do inevitably come with a lot of glazing, which isn’t as effective as brick walls are for keeping heat in and cold out, which is why these spaces can be hard to enjoy at this time of year.
Of course, you can make a huge difference to conservatory comfort levels by installing underfloor heating and hanging heavy drapes to keep the chill at bay, but something else you might like to consider is insulating the roof of the conservatory itself.
Most of the heat in your conservatory will escape from the roof so this is one of the best ways to go about making an immediately significant impact. There are several options available, whether you decide to install an insulation system inside the conservatory or whether you want to go for covering the existing external roof with tile or slate.
If you want to go further, you could also consider insulating the floor to help regulate the temperature. If you don’t really want to go down this route, you could consider using rugs strategically or laying down woodfibre insulation boards so you don’t have to take the flooring up.
Before any construction work is carried out onsite, it’s important to ensure that the frame of your conservatory is strong enough to support a solid roof. It could be a costly mistake to make otherwise!

According to the latest Retail Sales Great Britain March 2022 report from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), sales volumes were 2.2 per cent higher last month than in February 2020.
This is just before lockdown was instructed and shops around the country were forced to close, which meant, for stores without e-commerce facilities, trading ceased for a few months.
The figures revealed non-food shops achieved the most success recently, with sales volumes in these premises rising by 1.3 per cent last month. This was mainly driven by growth in household goods stores, such as DIY shops, which experienced an increase in sales of 2.6 per cent from the previous month.
While these are positive signs, retailers will be keen to do what they can to attract customers, as the cost-of-living crisis and rising inflation costs could discourage them from hitting the shops.
Creating more eye-catching displays, showing off the best stock, and making the most of social media outlets to promote the store are just some ways to boost sales.
It is also worth considering replacing shop fronts in Brighton and replacing some interiors and furnishings to give the store a new lease of life and make it look more appealing to new and repeat customers.
Here are some reasons why this might be perfect for your kitchen.
-Wipe clean A must-have for a kitchen worktop is that it should wipe clean easily, leaving a streak-free shine. This is exactly what glass worktops do, making your home feel polished and presentable with just a cloth and some antibacterial spray.
-Heat resistant While some materials, such as wood, mark if you leave hot pans on them, toughened glass is used in glass worktops, meaning they are heat resistant. So, if you have several saucepans on the hob and need somewhere to put a hot dish, you don’t have to worry about finding a trivet, as you can simply place it directly on to the glass.
This helps you free up lots of work surface area, as you can leave roasting, pizza, muffin or cupcake trays on the worktop without worrying about burning, melting or wearing it down.
-Long-lasting It is incredibly easy to maintain glass worktops, as they are durable and do not require any maintenance work.
For instance, woods such as pine warp and bend over time, and need regular up-keep to make sure they look good and remain effective.
House Beautiful explained: “Wooden worktops are quite high maintenance. They need oiling regularly, around every six months, to keep them water-resistant and hygienic.”
Bifold doors are doors made up of multiple sections, which unlike traditional doors do not swing open, but fold up, concertina style. They can either be comprised of two doors that fold to one side, or four or more panels which open from the centre. They can be made of a variety of materials, such as lightweight aluminium and uPVC.
As you will probably guess, bifold doors take up less space than either hinged doors or sliding doors. They are ideal for smaller rooms, where you want to make the most of the space available, or there simply isn’t the clearance for a swing door; maybe a balcony or garden room.
They are ideal for external access points where a large opening and a low threshold is desirable. This maybe for a pool room or summer house, or a commercial space such as a café, where you need to easily move furniture and other equipment in and out on a regular basis.
Glazed bifold doors are also a great choice for conservatories, so that you can enjoy an uninterrupted view of the garden from indoors, and maintain that crucial link between your indoor and outdoor space. Look for thermally efficient designs which will reduce heat loss and save on your energy bills.
They are not just for external openings either; they are also perfect for dividing internal areas, while maintaining the flow of light and space in the home, and providing that perfect balance between openness and privacy.

Over the winter months, many of the elements that make having a conservatory so enjoyable in summer become unbearable in winter, so it takes until spring for many people to start using it again.
Whether you are simply spring cleaning or planning a major refurbishment, here are some ideas to make the most of your conservatory this year.
Bridge The Gap Conservatories often work as a space between the main interior of the house and the garden, and so the best way to take advantage of this, particularly in the summer months is to build your garden and choose your conservatory doors with that in mind.
Adding bright flower beds can help create a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces, and installing or taking advantage of bi-fold doors in Brighton enables you to take advantage of the beautiful seaside landscape and sunlight over summer.
Manage The Light And Heat In older conservatories, a commonly cited problem is temperature control. Many older conservatories can take a long time to get warm in winter and can get unbearably hot in summer, which makes spring the ideal time to make some changes.
Install low radiators or an underfloor heating mat to avoid cold feet, whilst heat-reflecting blinds or installing solar reflective film onto your glass can stop the light and heat from making your beautiful extension unusable on hot, dry days.
Know It’s Role Many people buy a conservatory for the extra space it provides but in many cases there is little planning and forethought regarding exactly what the space will be used for, often meaning that the extension has a mix of purposes or worse is used simply as storage.
Whether you plan on using it as an extra living room, indoor-outdoor dining space or a study, plan the interior design for your conservatory the same way you would any other room in the house.

Sussex Live reports that the coast was threatened by enormous 6.5 metre tides, and flood warnings were put in place. Lampposts were seen to be swaying in the wind, numerous trees were felled, and travel was severely disrupted as roads and train lines closed. Schools also closed for the day, and bin collections were cancelled.
Sadly, the popular De La Warr Pavilion Bandstand in Bexhill was was torn apart beyond repair by the 75mph winds. The Bandstand was co-designed by architect Niall McLaughlin with Bexhill schoolchildren, and installed in December 2001. It was awarded the Regional RIBA Prize in 2002. This preceded the wider redevelopment of the Pavilion in 2003.
A spokeswoman said: “The bandstand has been at heart of our most democratic of spaces – the south terrace – and platformed international artists such as Eddie Izzard, Keane and Jeremy Deller’s Acid Brass. There is no damage to the actual building and no shows are affected at this stage.”
She added: “We invite you to share with us your stories of the bandstand – whether you appeared on it, danced in front of it, sat in a deckchair listening to music, had your wedding photograph taken on it, or were one of the original schoolchildren who helped design it.”
Meanwhile, tens of thousands of people across Sussex were left without power, as engineers battled to restore services in the teeth of Storm Franklin, which hit a couple of days later.

Whether it was from an accident or a smash-and-grab burglary, the first thing to do is try not to panic. We have a look at some simple steps to take to deal with a break-in, and having a plan can help you stay calm while you get all the necessary details taken care of.
Call the Police You must call the police immediately. Firstly, because the burglar may still be in the neighbourhood, or even still in the store, call the police and do not enter the store until they arrive, just in case. You will then be able to file a report, and allow police to gather any evidence that may see the perpetrator caught.
Figure Out What is Missing You need to determine what is missing not only for the police report but also for insurance purposes. Carefully enter the store and look for merchandise that appears to be missing. Check cash registers and safes, and any stores or displays of expensive merchandise or equipment. It may be difficult to ascertain what may be missing until you are able to undertake a full inventory.
Contact Your Insurance Company Contact your insurance provider to inform them of the break-in, and explain any losses experienced. If you have taken out property insurance, you should get reimbursement for repairs to the property and shopfront.
You might also have crime insurance coverage, depending on the type of policy you have. They also need to know about the merchandise that is damaged or missing, in case you plan to file a claim for that property.
Get Emergency Glass Replacement Broken windows need to be repaired or broaden up as soon as possible to secure your store from further intruders.

The effects of the high winds and freezing temperatures have been numerous. In some rural areas there are still , while the highest pub in England, , was cut off by snow - a common enough winter event that they were able to cope.
Elsewhere, however, it was the strength of the winds that caused the biggest problem, with several deaths and others having property damaged by flying debris and falling trees. It was small wonder that Brighton’s Christmas Festival was .
Storm Arwen may now have passed, but there is every chance that 24 hour glazing and boarding up services in Brighton will be needed soon, as more storms could easily follow.
A reason for this is that this winter is a La Nina year.. This is a Pacific weather phenomenon involving a cyclical cooling of the air, which can have wider global effects on weather. In particular, it can create greater volatility in the Atlantic.
Head of long-range forecasting at the Met Office Professor Adam Scaife explained that in early winter La Nina can cause high pressure systems to develop in the Atlantic, blocking the Gulf Stream from delivering milder air to the UK and thus making the early part of winter colder.
“However,” he added, “in late winter La Niña tends to drive a strengthening of the jet stream towards the Arctic increasing storminess and heavy rainfall, while bringing milder conditions to our sector.”
If that proves to be the case, Arwen will be far from the last severe storm to hit Brighton this winter, meaning windows and other parts of property could be vulnerable to significant damage.
The UK has adopted America’s tradition for Black Friday sales, with shops across the UK offering goods at discount prices after Thanksgiving Day.
It has become the biggest shopping day of the year in the USA and, in recent years, retailers across the UK have benefited significantly from the event.
Last year, shoppers spent an average of £295.67 each, with 39 per cent of the public making the most of the sales. While this is lower than the proportion who went out shopping the year before, collectively Brits spent nearly £6 billion on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, online sales after the weekend, goods.
Finder forecasts a third of the public will purchase deals this weekend, typically spending £275 each, totalling £4.76 billion.
While online shopping has become more popular over the years, 14 per cent of women and 16 per cent of men say they will get their discounts in store only. However, 40 per cent of males and 42 per cent of females will do a combination of online shopping and buying online.
This could help revive the high street, after the British Retail Consortium recently revealed sales in October were lower than the year before. UK retail sales dropped 0.2 per cent on a like-for-like basis from October 2020.
: UK head of retail at KPMG Paul Martin said sales last month were a “modest boost for the high street” in comparison with last year.

The Daily Record reports that over a dozen shop windows in Paisley feature illuminated window displays, highlighting various environmental issues and what people can do to help save the planet. Renfrewshire Leisure is collaborating with the Paisley First group to create the Paisley Windows on COP26 trail.
Three artists - Jane McInally, Jennie Bates and Rebecca Johnstone - were commissioned by Renfrewshire Leisure to work in partnership with local shop owners and design and create striking visuals that match the ethos of their business.
The illuminated shop windows display event takes place from 5 November to 12 November each evening between 5 pm and 8 pm.
Neon artwork from Jessica Ramm will be showcased, with an ‘Electricity Will Make Angels of Us All’ neon sign on one window, and a ‘Fate and Fortune Lumia’ sign seen under the bridge in Gauze Street.
Rikki Payne, Arts Manager at Renfrewshire Leisure said that the trail aims to be eye-catching, fun and entertaining, but also educational.
“Hopefully it will be a catalyst for discussion among families about the current perilous state of our environment and highlight why we need to adapt to climate change, take action and make changes in our lives to help the crisis,” he said.
He added that he hopes the trail will encourage people to recognise that even small actions can make a big difference.
“Although the big decisions will be made for all of us at COP26, this project gives local people a voice at the same time.”

However, whilst most businesses with a retail footprint use visual merchandising best practices to showcase their beautiful products in the best possible light, sometimes it takes some thinking outside of the box to truly stand out.
Here are some unique ways stores have managed to stand out.
Create A Retail Social Space As innately social creatures, we tend to gravitate towards places that already have people in them, and creating a temporary or permanent place for people to spend time in and around your store helps to create an organic form of visual merchandising, even if you do not display a single product.
It creates a sense of community, peace and comfort, and is something you can encourage by offering water, tea or coffee, a signifier that they are welcome to stay a while.
Use An Interactive Display There is a theory in advertising that there are two types of people who will see your advert; passive viewers will simply observe, but active viewers will engage more and have a stronger experience and opinion of an advert.
With a shop front, an interactive display can provide a way to draw people in, and do not need to consist of expensive technology.
An interactive display made up of some of your product lines can be incredibly effective and create extra traffic that engages directly with your store.
Simple games made with dinnerware, mascots, games and anything interactive works great here, and through clever use of hashtags and encouraging social media posts, can boost engagement with a web store as well.
Upcycle Taking a creative approach to displaying products will immediately cause you to stand out compared to competitors, and a way to do this is to take vintage, refurbished equipment and use it as part of a display.
Wheelbarrows can be used as buckets to hold flower seeds, record players can become music shelves and so on.
One of the biggest advances that has allowed for such bright, versatile shop fronts is the development of toughened safety glass, which is glass that is held in place by a protective layer when it is broken and will crack into a “spider web” rather than shatter into pieces.
What people may not know is that the development of safety glass began with an accident.
The French chemist Édouard Bénédictus invented the concept largely by accident in 1903 he inadvertently coated a glass flask he was using with the plastic cellulose nitrate, a film primarily known for its use in photography and early film.
When he dropped it by accident, the glass cracked and shattered but held in place, not breaking into pieces.
Initially, he did not think too much, until six years later when he heard about a car accident where the glass windscreen shattered and badly injured two women.
At the time, windscreens on cars were only used to block dirt and flies and crashing through them was so common that the resulting injuries received the nickname “glass necklace”.
Mr Bénédictus filed a patent and got to work founding the first-ever safety glass company, Société du Verre Triplex, who created glass that was designed to break without shattering.
As it was expensive, it was not initially used for cars but instead became used in the eyeglass for gas masks during the First World War.
As glass technology evolved and allowed the creation of larger sheets, toughened glass was used not only in more elaborate windscreens but bigger and brighter shop fronts as well.
. Great as it may be to see a normal autumn after all the restrictions of last year, shopkeepers will be very aware of the problems they may face during the season. This is one of those times when there is a frequent need to provide emergency shop front glazing in Brighton.
. Weather can be one cause. While extreme storms like the notorious Great Storm of 1987 - the one when weatherman Michael Fish famously said there wasn’t a hurricane on the way - are very rare, the fact is that any big autumn storms will tend to sweep in across the Atlantic and hit the south coast first.
. While a well-fitted window will not be blown in by wind alone, there is always the risk that airborne debris can hit it, causing serious damage.
. A second threat is of vandalism. Sadly, for some October 31st is not about a bit of ‘trick or treat’, but trick without the treat. That can mean all sorts of criminal damage, with shop fronts not being immune.
. Bonfire Night also brings its own looming issues as another form of antisocial behaviour is the misuse of fireworks through October and even after November 5th, which can also lead to damage to shop fronts. Although the law now prohibits the sale of fireworks to under 18s, such misbehaviour still goes on.
. Of course, Brighton is not alone in sometimes suffering such antisocial behaviour in autumn, as it happens everywhere. The same applies to burglaries, as thieves will look to take advantage of the darker evenings and lower numbers of people on the streets when it is cold to escape detection and break into shops and homes.
. While shopkeepers may face such perils, the good news is that with our speedy services, we can ensure your shopfront glazing is replace swiftly, helping you get back to business fast.

Hailing Brighton as a town that’s “never short on fun”, the article reviews a growing clutch of cool boutique hotels, saying how these new trendy places to stay are helping to shift the city’s longstanding holiday image of being cheap and cheerful.
Even better, compared to other cities across the UK, the room rates are more reasonable, meaning that you can plan chic weekend trips to the buzzy seaside resort of Brighton on a budget. Here are three of The Times’ favourite Brighton hotels:
1.The Grand With unbeatable sea views from a third of its bedrooms, and a recent revamp resulting in pleasingly muted art deco-style glamour, The Grand is true to its name. Make sure you enjoy afternoon tea in the Victoria Terrace and cocktails in the bustle of the hotel bar.
2.Drakes One of the region’s most elegant boutique hotels, Drakes spans two Georgian townhouses in Kemp Town, featuring traditional blond-wood panelling, Poirot-style detailing, and fabulous bathrooms.
3.Brighton Harbour Hotel Another sea-facing beauty here: Brighton Harbour Hotel is popular for its nautical-themed bedrooms that include complimentary vintage decanters of gin and sherry, as well as the hotel’s secret grotto-themed spa with pools, whirlpools, steam rooms, sauna and Espa treatments.

Garden rooms also make excellent art or craft studios, and are just great chill out spaces for relaxing or pursuing hobbies. They are easy to install, and in most cases, they don’t require planning permission. Whatever the purpose of a garden room, one of the most important elements to get right is the glazing.
You will want plenty of natural light, which will make it feel airy and spacious, and be more beneficial to your mental wellbeing too. To ensure comfortable year-round use, double glazing will be essential.
Full-sized bi-fold doors, or sliding doors, are a very popular choice to maximise the use of natural light. They also help to create that flexible boundary between the indoors and the outdoors, helping us to feel close to nature all the year round.
If you want to maximise the view, floor to ceiling glazing with no bars to interrupt the visual line is a common option. This style of glazing is fixed, so you may want to include a casement window elsewhere that you can pop open when you need some fresh air.
To take things a step further, you could even go for wrap-around glazing, where the glass extends around two, or even three, sides of the structure. This could be in the form of floor to ceiling glazed panels, or desk-height glazing, which gives you the option of positioning office furniture to give you the feeling that you are working en plein air!

With shop fronts in Brighton known for their mix of vibrant design and traditional features, owners need to do even more to make their brick and mortar store stand out from the rest.
Here are some top tips to make passers-by take notice and take stock.
Tell A Story The best shop fronts tell a story with their display, rather than simply display a line of products in the window.
Clothing stores will often create a look with several different complementing styles that match the feel of the season. Toy stores, especially more traditional ones, will create a world through dioramas, play-sets and imagined worlds.
Take a look at shop fronts both in your particular retail field and more generally to get a feel for the kinds of stories being told with their inventory and how they make just window shopping an amazing experience.
Eye Level Is Buy Level One of the most simple principles of stocking shelves should also be at the core of your shop front displays.
Show off your newest, best or most popular products at eye level, with smaller items lower and in the foreground, with larger ones making up the background.
Once you have that basic setup laid out, you can start telling your marketing story as described above.
Trendsurf In online marketing, particularly on social media, trend surfing is a core element of campaigns to keep them relevant and engaging. This principle should be applied to shop fronts as well.
Regularly switch out your inventory and keep an eye out for the next major theme or event you can design around, whether it be a seasonal change, festive occasion or current event.
Sandwiched between the sea with a fine shingle beach on one side and the lofty, air hills and greenery of the South Downs on the other, enjoying more warmth and sunshine than most British cities due to its southerly location and yet within commuting distance of London, there is certainly far more good news than bad about the place.
However, being by the sea does bring potential problems when the weather turns bad, with seafront properties facing wind and waves and no natural barriers against the full force of any storms that might hit.
This is a problem the south is often affected more by when late summer and autumn bring storms, such as the vast tree loss caused by the Great Storm of October 1987. Because such weather events come from the Atlantic, it is nearly always southern and western regions that get hit first.
While there may not be anything of that magnitude heading our way this year, there is still a chance that we may be on the receiving end of some nasty weather in the next few months. Demand for broken window glass repairs in Brighton could rise significantly as a result.
The Met Office data on storms shows the kind of pattern that the UK faces, listing the named storms it has recorded since this practice came in. The list for the last year shows there were three named storms in October 2020, compared with none in November and one each in December, January and February. The next - and most recent - storm, named Evert, did not occur until July 20th.
It may not be another 1987, which will please weather presenters seeking to avoid Michael Fish’s famous line that there wasn’t a hurricane on the way. But the next storm may yet require some window repair work as nature does its worst.
Whether it is keeping them wide open during the daytime to get a bit more airflow through the house, or making sure they are well covered to avoid being woken too early by the morning sun, householders will certainly not be leaving them alone.
All this is a reminder of how important it is to have windows that can be opened, rather than opaque floor-to-ceiling panes that can leave a room short of ventilation.
After all, being able to open windows isn’t just about keeping the house cool in hot summer weather; it’s also about freshening it up when there are unpleasant smells, or a lot of smoke about from cigarettes or a kitchen mishap, especially when the smoke alarm is going crazy.
However, while it may be nice to enjoy long days of sunshine in minimal clothing, the reality nobody wants to think of is that the nights are already getting shorter and, a few months from now, the role your windows will play in keeping your house insulated against winter cold will be crucial.
That’s why now may be a good time to fit double glazing, if you only have secondary glazing at the moment. Secondary glazing tends to be between four and six inches thick, but it only has average levels of insulating properties.
By contrast, double glazing offers something much more effective, because the gap between the two panes can trap air, which provides a better layer of insulation. This works in the same way that having multiple layers of thin clothing works better than one thick layer.
Of course, nobody is thinking about multiple clothing layers just yet, but with the right new windows you won’t need to when you’re indoors this winter either, while also being able to keep the house cool when the warm weather returns next summer.
The Eastern Daily Press reports that children's clothing store Coccolino in Norwich is one of the thirteen shops chosen to have their windows transformed with designs that were created to showcase each unique business story.
The displays are digitally shoppable, using a unique QR code to take prospective customers to Facebook and Instagram, where they can browse, shop and support local stores online.
As well as Coccolino, the other stores in the project are Healthier Without in Streatham, Humbugs Coffee and Crafts in Dudley, Head in the Clouds and Tinkers Treasures in Bishop Auckland, Oceanic Beauty Salon in Stockbridge, and Revive Interiors in Doncaster, all in England.
In Wales, there are Just Into Crafts in Llanelli, and Angie's Baby Cwtch in Llanelli, representing Northern Ireland is Crumtons and Curious Candy in Bangor, and in Scotland, Little Shop Of Heroes and Sew Yarn Crafty in Dunfermline.
Steve Hatch, vice-president for Northern Europe, at Facebook, said: “The past 16 months have been tough for small firms and many had to pivot to digital shops quickly so they could reach customers locally and further afield.
“These stunning window creations celebrate strong and resilient bricks-and-mortar shops who have used our technology to build their community.”
He added that the tech giant hopes that these window transformations encourage people across the UK to continue to shop at and support local businesses as the pandemic restrictions are lifted and the world slowly returns to normal.

According to a study by Goodmove, 48 per cent of Britons have got the DIY bug since the pandemic started, spending £1,640 each on average. This will have included everything from extensions to new bathrooms and kitchens, not to mention windows.
There will be many living in Sussex by the sea who may wish to join in. After all, why spend money on a foreign holiday to one of the tiny number of ‘green list’ destinations when the sea is on the doorstep and a staycation this year can free up cash for other things before overseas travel resumes in safer times?
A good thing about fitting double glazing in Brighton is that it is not so major a work that it needs planning permission, except in Grade I Listed buildings.
This is worth noting because research by Metals4U has shown that Brighton and Hove is not one of the easiest council areas in which to gain planning permission for home improvements.
According to the study, the council area most likely to grant planning permission is Copeland in west Cumbria, while nearby Carlisle is sixth. Copeland was one of two councils, along with the Scilly Isles, to grant planning permission for home improvement in 100 per cent of cases. The City of London and Bolsover in Derbyshire had a 98 per cent approval rate.
Thankfully, Brighton was not the worst for agreeing applications either. In stark contrast to the two most central London councils, Dagenham and Redbridge was worst with an approval rate of only 52 per cent, with the next worst being Redbridge and Hounslow. In all, 11 of the 15 lowest approval rates were in London boroughs.
A report by Shoppercentric looking into consumer trends found that on average, a shopper visits 5.5 stores per month, which is more than one more on average than the average person visited in January 2020.
Given that the same report notes that more people are making a single main shop rather than topping up as and when they need to, this has changed how retailers need to attract and keep their customers.
The primary factors affecting this have been age, financial impact and anxiety level, but they have changed shopper behaviour in somewhat unique ways.
It is somewhat expected that younger shoppers are more willing to hunt for value in a variety of locations, with 18-34-year-olds visiting an average of 6.5 shops in a month.
However, the biggest factor affecting store loyalty is anxiety level, with people who identified as extremely anxious visiting 6.8 shops in a month. As well as this, people who have affected financially, in either planned or unplanned ways shopped in more stores.
The reasons for this may be interconnected. The last year has been particularly challenging for young people, leading to a connection between the three different factors and shopper choice.
Ultimately, availability and price are the most critical factors, and people tend to be loyal to any store they can get a delivery slot from or can safely shop in.

On The Wight reports that Ryde has installed an art exhibition into the shop fronts of three empty properties that intend to highlight the heritage of the seaside town.
The exhibition is part of the Heritage Action Zone (HAZ) project where artists Teresa Grimaldi and Sarah Vardy have created bespoke heritage-themed installations in High Street shop windows, in collaboration with Shademakers UK, the New Carnival Company and Network Ryde.
The displays showcase the origins of Ryde Carnival and the rich carnival heritage of the town, as well as the ‘exciting’ plans for the former Elizabeth Pack building.
Harrogate’s BID (Business Improvement District) is using its empty shop fronts to showcase the Yorkshire town’s connection to famous visitors over the years, including The Beatles, Louis Armstrong, and Sir Winston Churchill.
Composer Elgar often visited the town, staying at both the Crown Hotel and Majestic Hotel, whilst the Beatles and jazz trumpeter Armstrong played at the Royal Hall.
Meanwhile, in Cornwall, an exhibition called Street View Falmouth will include the work of over 100 local artists, which will be displayed in both shop fronts and homes around the south coast town.
Organisers and artists Lily-Peach Forster, Rebecca Kent and Chloe Rylander said: "The aim of our Street View exhibition is to spread joy and bring the community together over lockdown.
“In times when people have felt so isolated, we believe that it's important to give people something positive to work towards, as well as encouraging everyone to go outside (for their daily exercise!).”

Whether you use store-bought window cleaning solutions, or go for the tried and tested method of using vinegar and newspaper, we have a look at why the time of day you clean your windows can make a difference.
Before you get started, sweep dirt from the window frame with a brush or vacuum it up with your machine's dusting attachment. This will prevent dirt from turning into a muddy mess when mixed with a cleaner.
To clean your windows, use warm, soapy water with a splash of vinegar to wash the windows, then use old newspaper to buff them up to a pristine shine. Some many different methods and solutions that can be used, with people recommending Windolene, Astonish window cleaner, Mr Muscle glass cleaner, black tea and Dettol antibacterial spray.
Some even recommend not using any products at all but just water and a cloth.
But whichever is your preferred method, avoid cleaning your windows when the sun is out and shining, as your cleaning solution will dry too quickly, leaving smears and streaks that look even more apparent when the sun shines on your windows.
Set to the task either when it is a more overcast day, or when the sun isn’t directly shining on your windows.
You only need to clean your windows once or twice a year, but it's even easier if you divide the job up and do it room by room.

However, one couple in Wales has gone one further by constructing an elevated, high-end, luxury treehouse wrapped around a majestic tree on their land that would not look out of place in the pages of a glossy magazine, reports Wales Online.
It took John and Laura Lewis six months to build the Prince Llywelyn Treehouse, which features a hot tub on the veranda in the perfect place to stargaze while having a soak, a free-standing brass bath indoors, a fully fitted kitchen diner, a floor-suspended hammock, and even a slide.
One of the most striking features of the treehouse, which is big enough to accommodate five people, is a huge glazed wall that provides views over the couple’s land and for many miles to the Radnor Forest on the horizon.
The huge glazed front of the treehouse looks over the spacious veranda, which has an outdoor dining area and a hot tub. The treehouse is made primarily from wood, with a steel foundation holding it 13 meters in the air, and has metallic accents, soft textile textures, and on-trend colours that make it such a desirable place to stay.
The couple used reclaimed and up-cycled materials wherever possible, such as a wall made out of old doors, and recycled plastic slates for the roof. Sustainably sourced materials were important for the couple.
Carpenter John said: “The front section is made from reclaimed oak beams which could be 200 years old. I actually bought them a couple of years ago thinking we might build a treehouse - so it's amazing to finally see it come to fruition.
“The cladding we used is also made of leftover bits of board which are about 30 years old, but we repurposed.”
For more information about the Lewis' treehouses, find them on Instagram at @squirrelsnest__ or via website thewanderlist.uk.

The best way to take advantage of this, particularly if you have one of the many vibrant shopfronts in Brighton which is already full of character is to take full advantage of what is there and help it to shape the look of your brand.
Here are some top tips for effectively using your shop front to draw customers in.
Ensure Your Shopfront Fits The Area
There is an important balance to make if you have a more traditional building or even a listed building between ensuring your shop reflects the modern nature of your business and respecting the existing heritage and surroundings.
Beyond legal requirements in some areas and for certain buildings, taking advantage of the historic nature of your building gives your business a history, presence and sense of belonging in the area which can help draw customers in.
Clear Signage And Displays Avoid clutter in your signage and your shop windows. Your display must be easy to read from across the road, clear and purposeful. It is better to highlight a few products effectively than everything you sell badly.
Light It Up Your lighting is an effective tool to showcase your business and important information, even when it is closed.
It is important to keep a balance between being bright enough to highlight your products and services, but not so bright as to be intrusive and bothersome to pedestrians and neighbouring tenants.
Research shows that customers across all generations have become far more comfortable and accepting of online shopping during the pandemic, for both essential and luxury items. Will people still remain cautious about venturing outside to potentially crowded spaces, or will there be a pent-up demand for the traditional browsing experience?
Jewellery brand Goldsmiths are anticipating a changed retail environment, and its major stores will be redesigned for a “relaxed, inclusive and experiential” concept, according to Business Live. This includes the use of VIP rooms, luxury bar and refreshment areas, more open layouts, and digital browsing tools.
Stores are recognising that they will have to offer that “extra something” to tempt people out from the comfort of their living rooms. Adding personal touches and making shops less functional and more of a “destination” is an attempt to keep the high street relevant in the future.
Goldsmiths chief executive Brian Duffy commented: “Our ambition is for customers to have a memorable luxury experience that stays with them and their families long after they’ve made their purchase.”
“We believe the repositioning and new store concept will transform not just the Goldsmiths profile and customer experience, but also bring fresh life to high streets in major towns and cities around the country following an extremely challenging period for in-person retail caused by the global coronavirus pandemic.”
With the closure of big-name brands such as Debenhams and Topshop, there will be some sadness and concern for the future of the high street. However, there is also confidence that stores will evolve, or maybe even adapt to different purposes entirely, such as housing, sports and leisure, and office space.

As The Metro noted, non-essential retailers in England are set to be allowed to welcome customers no earlier than 12 April. It’s not only retailers that will be allowed to reopen on this date, but also hairdressers and beauty salons.
This is step two of the government’s phased reopening of the country’s economy and society in general. In his announcement, Boris Johnson said that this phase will begin five weeks after step one, which is the reopening of schools on 8 March.
However, he also cautioned that if the data suggests that the dates of the reopening need to be pushed back, then the government will do so.
The timeline for non-essential retail reopening in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will be determined by the devolved governments and is therefore likely to be different to the proposals for England.
Mr Johnson added that an announcement about the proposed relaxation of restrictions as part of step two will be made seven days in advance to give businesses time to prepare or alter their reopening plans if needed.
If your shop has been closed for months, you may find that you need help with emergency shop front glazing in Brighton or wherever you’re based if there has been any vandalism or damage caused by the winter weather.
It is certainly worth assessing your premises for such issues sooner rather than later to allow you to get them fixed in preparation for reopening in April.
Sharecast reported that retail analyst Springboard is expecting to see footfall at England’s retailers increase significantly once they are allowed to open their doors again. The organisation is predicting a 47.9 per cent uptick in footfall week-on-week from 12 April should stores reopen as currently hoped.
A beautiful new shower, perhaps with multiple shower heads, and frameless glass shower screens and doors can transform the look and feel of the bathroom. If you are selling your home, it could sweeten the deal for potential buyers, and if you aren’t, then you have your own spa-like bathroom experience.
As with all home improvement projects, much of the design, size, and materials used will depend on your budget. If you are aiming for a hotel spa-style bathroom, then undoubtedly, you will need to have a much larger budget than simply updating the showerhead.
Soaking tub used to be the wow factor for a bathroom, however, now it's a walk-in shower that will impress potential buyers, friends, and guests. Spacious and spa-like, they are as beautiful to bathe in as they are accessible.
This is particularly important for buyers with limited mobility, as well as homeowners who wish to age in place and will appreciate the accessibility a walk-in shower offers.
A full bathroom renovation is both a pricey proposition and a time-consuming task, and will also mean you will not have access to the room until it is complete. But a shower remodel, whether on its own or part of a larger bathroom makeover, could be the key to getting better offers for your property.

Business Matters Magazine recently offered some advice about how you could improve your bookkeeping as we move into the new year, so if you set resolutions for your business maybe you could add one of these to your list?
The first tip is to find software that can do some of the heavy lifting for you. There are many systems available for small businesses that can make bookkeeping quicker and easier. Speak to Xero accountants in Bourne Endfor advice on how to set the software up and make it work for you.
Another recommendation is to be aware of some of the most common mistakes small business owners make in relation to their bookkeeping, such as missing important tax deadlines or failing to claim all of their expenses.
By making yourself aware of these mistakes, you can seek to avoid them and introduce systems and reminders to keep you on track.
Also on the list is to get help from professional bookkeepers or accountants if you feel out of your depth when it comes to your finances.
As we noted last month, outsourcing your bookkeeping could even improve your efficiency, as not having to worry about keeping on top of the day-to-day of your business finances will free up your time to enable you to concentrate on your core business activities.
Indeed, it may be that glazing services in East become very busy as boarded up hostelries and closed B&B establishments are revived as the summer of 2021 approaches.
This week saw the Caravan and Motorhome Club predicting that demand for UK holidays would emerge like "a cork popping from a bottle” in the months ahead, the BBC reports.
A combination of better weather, the rollout of the vaccines to suppress the virus and the potential problems of travelling overseas are all reasons the club and other organisations believe staycation demand will soar.
However, while caravans, campsites and glamping may be the kind of domestic holiday some will opt for, others may prefer hotels and B&Bs.
Some hoteliers may decide 2021 is a good time to enhance their facilities, including better glazing, as they prepare to take in new guests. Some of these may be people who would normally holiday abroad, but who might discover attractions closer to home that will nurture a habit of taking more staycations in the future.
International travel will be hard to undertake because of restrictions in both directions. Some have banned travel from the UK because of the new fast-spreading Covid variant that emerged in Kent, while Britain has taken similar action to prevent imports of other mutant strains from Brazil and South Africa.
Another issue may be the rate at which countries are managing to vaccinate their populations. While the UK has made very good progress so far and will soon be able to rely on a new vaccines manufacturing facility for the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine, many European countries have made slow starts to their programmes.
Some countries may also struggle to innoculate enough people because of widespread vaccine scepticism, with France being one such country.
It might just be that for many Britons, staying on the other side of the Channel in Sussex by the sea could be the best option this year.
The Swindon Advertiser recently revealed that a survey by property developers Barratt and David Wilson Homes found that just under half of those questioned said they were concerned about the additional expense that working from home could bring.
In addition, more than one-quarter of respondents said that they wear additional layers of clothing during the day to keep them warm and prevent them from needing to put the heating on earlier in the day.
The property developers offered a range of advice to help people better manage their heating requirements at home, including recommending that they heat rooms to a constant temperature, rather than heating them up and allowing them to cool before putting the heating back on again.
They also recommended small changes, such as tucking curtains behind radiators, avoiding putting furniture in front of radiators and using draft excluders around doors and windows if necessary.
Of course, you might decide that it’s time to install new bi fold doors in East Sussex if you find that certain areas are consistently letting drafts in.
As well as keeping you more comfortable during the day, having more energy efficient glazing and doors could also reduce your heating bills.
The Telegraph & Argus recently reported that Bradford Council is among the organisations to have endorsed the Construction Leadership Council’s national retrofit strategy, which involves working to make existing homes more energy efficient by taking a “whole house” approach.
That might involve installing insulation or new double glazing, among other measures, the newspaper noted.
Sky News reported that many were unphased about returning to the country’s high streets, with predictions that the country would spend £1.5 billion collectively on the first Saturday that the shops were open again.
It seems that some shoppers were also taking advantage of the significant sales at retailers like Debenhams, as well as those under the Arcadia Group, which both went into administration recently.
The news provider also shared figures from the British Retail Consortium, which showed that footfall on England’s high streets was up by an impressive 150 per cent when lockdown lifted, compared to a week before when only essential retailers were allowed to open their doors.
With the news that big retailers such as Debenhams, Topshop and Dorothy Perkins would be disappearing from high streets in the near future, there has been speculation about what will happen to their many stores.
Writing for The Stage recently, Richard Jordan suggested that empty shop fronts could provide an opportunity for those in the theatre and creative industry. He pointed to Chicago in the US, where artists have been turning empty stores into pop-up venues for entertainment.
If you’re looking for ways to revamp shop fronts in Brighton, make sure that the glazing at the store is secure and up to standard. As a landlord who could be looking for new tenants in 2021, it’s worth making sure that aspects like this are taken care of.
The Guardian The toughest restrictions are in Tier 3, which includes Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, and Sheffield, and pubs and restaurants will only be allowed to serve takeaways.
In Tier 2, which includes London and Liverpool, the government guidance says that pubs and bars must close, unless operating as restaurants, and alcohol can only be served with a ‘substantial meal’.
These venues and restaurants must operate table service only, and no food orders should be taken after 10 pm, but the hospitality curfew has been extended from 10 pm to 11 pm. However, businesses can still sell food and drink for consumption - organised through a delivery service or click-and-collect/drive-thru, after 10 pm.
Face covering rules still apply. Everyone must wear a face shield unless they are exempt.
In Scotland, non-essential shops, pubs and restaurants in high-risk areas - known as Tier 4 - remain shut until December 11. In Level 3 areas, hospitality businesses are banned from selling alcohol and must close by 6 pm.
In Wales, you can go to a pub or restaurant with up to three other people from different households, excluding children aged under 11, who do not live with you. This is subject to face coverings and a 10 pm curfew on alcohol sales.
In Northern Ireland, pubs and restaurants remain closed until December 10.

But while you’re dressing up your living room and dining room, don’t forget about your entrance hall. Smaller interior spaces can often get overlooked, but decorating your hallway should be top of the list, as it gives you that Christmas glow as soon as you step through the front door.
So let’s deck the halls with boughs of holly—and other design ideas to give your hallway some serious Christmas sparkle…
Showcase some miniature trees Don’t let your main Christmas tree get all the attention. Mini trees are perfect for injecting Christmas cheer into smaller spaces and dark corners, such as your hallway or under the stairs.
Hang wreaths from your staircase Wreaths don’t have to just be for the front door. Spruce up simple rattan or wooden hoops (such as those used for embroidery), get creative with sprigs of spruce, fir or ivy, and hang them from your staircase or interior doors.
Pile up the presents Presents aren’t just for opening. If you get on your gift-wrapping game they double up as some dreamy décor, too. Opt for pretty papers and luxurious ribbons to make a real statement by the staircase in your entrance hall.

This is especially true in areas where retail establishments have been forced to close by law, and so the store cannot be used normally.
Shopfronts in Brighton are not quite as affected, as the medium local Covid alert level there means that businesses can operate within social distancing guidelines.
However, for stores in Wales, the firebreak lockdown has meant that non-essential shops have had to close completely.
During this time, the focus of your shop front should be as much to raise awareness of your brand and be a central part of a multi-channel shopping experience than necessarily be focused on increasing footfall.
Retail Stores And Brand Identity Retail stores are a vital part of the brand identities of many businesses. Especially for local businesses which trade on their community spirit, the store itself is a big part of that identity.
That can continue even with a shift to more online shopping. Having that physical presence has a comforting effect to many shoppers, who know that help is not far away.
The key to taking full advantage of your shopfront is to ensure your website shows it front and centre. Even if you cannot necessarily open as a store, make sure the shopfront looks appealing and take some high-quality pictures to use on your website.
If you have primarily treated your website as a signpost for your store, do the opposite. Make sure your website and product lines are advertised.
Having QR codes in your shop windows and advertising to directly link to certain product pages can help to convert an interested eye into a customer.
The Independent shared the findings of the poll conducted by online letting agent Mashrooms, which also found that 49 per cent of renters in this demographic want their landlord to spruce up their homes.
In addition, almost one-third revealed that their landlord had already splashed out for home improvements on the property they rent in 2020.
Of course, with winter just around the corner, some of the improvements people want to see could be essential as the wetter and colder weather arrives, such as installing new double glazing in Brighton.
CEO of Mashroom Stephan Dobrovolskiy told the newspaper that the Covid-19 pandemic has impacted both renters and landlords this year.
“Both tenants and landlords are feeling the strain, uncertainty of what’s to come is quickly changing many tenants’ views on moving and are undermining future plans, whilst many landlords are struggling to come to terms with the rapidly changing market,” he stated.
An article for East Midlands Business Link recently highlighted some of the top home improvements people can make to ensure their home is a nicer space to work and relax in.
Top of the list is making alterations to outdoor spaces to make them more hospitable for hosting friends and family, especially as the weather gets colder. The publication also suggested replacing patio doors with bifold doors to make it easier to connect the home with the garden when the weather allows.
However, a new, fitted and insulated front door can also helpkeep your house warm and stop heat escaping , which is better for the environment, and your utility bills as winter approaches and we are spending much more time at home these days.
We wanted to look at some things to consider when choosing a new front door.
Budget As with any house-related upgrade, purchase, or refurb, it’s important to know your budget. A well made and fitted front door is a solid investment for the overall property, and it is worth getting it professionally fitted to ensure security and insulation, as well as making sure it compliments the look of your home.
Materials There are so many different doors available, the material is it made from can be an important consideration. Traditional options, such as solid timber doors can look aesthetically pleasing, but may not provide the insulation and security that uPVC and composite doors can offer.
Wooden doors will need much more maintenance in the long run, as they will depreciate in harsh weather conditions, and will need painting and varnishing. uPVC doors are much lower maintenance and easily cleaned.
Colour As the focal point of your home, the colour of your door needs to be chosen carefully. It needs to compliment the exterior of your home. Most companies and professional fitters will be able to advise you to help get the look you want to achieve.
Energy efficiency The heat retention of a home is very important as you want comfort and efficiency when it comes to your energy bills. A high-quality well-fitted front door can contribute greatly to energy efficiency, stopping draughts that can leak through the sides and glazing if poor quality materials have been used and inadequate installation has taken place.

The research also found that 56 per cent of homeowners are adding jobs like lagging pipes, clearing out gutters and securing roof tiles to their list of maintenance tasks to complete ahead of winter for the first time.
This is good news for those looking to protect their properties from adverse weather, the insurer noted, pointing out that some 23 per cent of UK residents have experienced property damage as a result of extreme weather.
It also highlighted the top weather-related property issues, noting that damaged or removed roof tiles were the top issue caused by extreme weather.
Damaged or fallen fences, damage to garden plants and outhouses/garages, as well as flooding were named as some of the other issues homeowners faced. In addition, some ten per cent of claims involved a broken window.
UK claims director, Global General Insurance, Aviva Andrew Morrish commented: “For anyone who hasn’t already examined their home to make sure it’s winter ready, now is the perfect time.”
It could also be worth exploring who you can contact for broken window glass repairs in Brighton if you need to.
As well as thinking about how well protected your home is from adverse weather, it’s also important to consider overall home security as the nights draw in.
Property Reporter recently shared the findings of a survey by safe.co.uk, which found that many of us aren’t taking basic home security precautions, with 68 per cent of those questioned not even having a standard burglar alarm fitted at their home.
Whether you plan to tackle some DIY jobs yourself. or get the professionals in, there are some mistakes that anyone can easily make. We have a look at a few of them here.
1. When planning the renovation, do not forget some of the simple basics. For example, you need to ensure that you can reach the toilet paper from a seated position, and the towel rail needs to be within arms reach of the bath or shower.
2. You will need a well-illuminated mirror, whether it’s for shaving, applying makeup, or putting in contact lenses. If possible, place the washbasin away from under a window, and install an illuminated mirror above it.
3. You must include adequate storage in the bathroom to ensure towels, bath and shower creams and shampoos, razors, shavers, hair care equipment does not end up cluttering your brand new designer bathroom.
4. If you are going for a freestanding bath, then carefully consider the placement. If it is too close to a wall, it may be difficult to clean behind it, and you may want to include storage so you are not struggling to balance shampoo bottles on the rim.
5. Showers can be difficult to keep clean, so avoid any enclosures with an intricate framework, and choose large format tiles to minimise mould and algae problems, and avoid using cheap grout. A good ventilation system will help eliminate some cleaning issues.
6. finally, don’t be tempted to do it all yourself. Such elements as wiring and plumbing really do need the expert touch of a professional. It will be cheaper than needing a professional at a later date to rip out fixtures to locate leaks caused by DIY plumbing, for example.

There are many ways to see if you can reduce your bills and expenditures, but when it comes to reducing bills and making your home much more eco-friendly, there’s little better than ensuring you have modern double glazing throughout your home.
We have a look at some of the benefits of double glazing in Brighton.
1. Better Insulation Double glazing was developed to provide far better insulation than traditional glazing. The layer of inert gas between the planes of glass acts as an insulating barrier, significantly reducing the amount of heat transfer from your home to the cooler temperatures of outdoors, helping your home retain heat. In Summer, it keeps your house cooler by restricting the heat from outside. This will vastly reduce your energy bills in the long term, making double glazing a good investment, as well as raising the value of your home.
2. Noise Reduction Double glazing also works as an insulator from noise, which is particularly relief for those living in noisy neighbourhoods, or near busy roads or airports, especially if you have made the move to work from home, providing you with fewer distractions.
3. Increased Security Modern double glazing is much harder to break compared to single glazed windows, and the frames are very difficult to force open from the outside. You can also improve on that level of security with laminated or toughened glass.
4. Reduced Interior damage Double glazing will also filter out a lot of the harmful UV radiation from sunlight that slowly bleaches the colour of your soft furnishings.
Increased insulation, decreased noise pollution, and lower bills, not only making your home cosier and safer, but you will also be making a difference to the environment by reducing your carbon footprint.

The government recently announced that it was changing the rules for planning permissions when building new houses and hospitals, and the emphasis is strongly on eco-friendly homes, so we look at six of the features of these.
Insulation
Improving the thermal efficiency of your home will not only reduce your energy bills but your carbon emissions too. Replace traditional insulating materials with renewable, non-toxic, and biodegradable options.
Water conservation
A water butt can help to collect rainwater that is ideal for watering the garden, washing the car, and even for toilets, potentially saving gallons of water. Low-flow taps and showers, as well as water-efficient dishwashers and washing machines, will also save water without you even realising.
Renewable energy
Many energy suppliers now have green or greener tariffs, and we can also help with installing solar panels, biomass boilers, and heat pumps to reduce reliance on the national grid. These eco-technologies may be expensive, but they pay for themselves over time.
Energy Star appliances
An Energy Star label on an appliance means it's been rated as energy efficient by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). These products can help you save energy without having to sacrifice features or functionality.
Natural lighting and ventilation
It’s vital to make the most of natural lighting and ventilation in your home to create a healthier and more efficient indoor environment. Choosing thermally efficient glazing in East Sussex is a way to conserve heat in the home and reduce your impact on the environment too.
Reclaimed wood
Using reclaimed timber within your build helps to preserve our forests and prevent over-forestation. Wood reclaimed from old buildings and furniture is often from more mature trees, making it stronger, more durable and less prone to warping than newer, virgin wood.

Research conducted by Zopa revealed that 43 per cent of Brits carried out home improvements during the lockdown caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, while 44 per cent intend to embark on a home improvement project before 2020 is out.
In fact, the survey revealed that 43 per cent of households spent an average of £3,169 on home improvements during the lockdown earlier this year.
The most popular area to spend money on was gardening, with 77 per cent splashing out here. Many (64 per cent) also spent time and money upgrading their outdoor space in other ways, while a similar number opted to repaint their walls and 12 per cent spent money upgrading their home working space.
Clare Gambardella, chief customer officer at Zopa, commented: “Although lockdown is easing, many people believe it will have an impact on our socialising and working habits for some time to come, so it’s no surprise that people plan to continue improving their homes.”
Being able to make best use of your outdoor areas is likely to be a priority for many. Fitting bi fold doors in East Sussexcould be a great way to allow you to create a seamless living space between your garden and other areas of your home.
As Prima recently reported, figures from Rightmove show that gardens have become a more important feature for many house hunters. The number of buyers on the platform who stated that having a garden is a must for their next property doubled between June this year and June in 2019.
That means anything you can do to make the most of your outdoor space will not only mean you can enjoy it more, but could also make it more appealing to any prospective buyers if you are thinking of moving.
With home improvements, it’s often about the quick wins and you can make your house feel like new just by switching up the door handles on all the doors or giving rooms a new coat of paint.
But sometimes, the bigger jobs will need doing too and you can add serious value to your property if you invest in the likes of double glazing, loft conversions, new kitchens and bathrooms, and so on.
To help with eco-friendly home improvements, the government has just announced its Green Home Grant, with vouchers worth up to £5,000 issued to homeowners around England to make energy-efficient changes to their properties, a scheme that will launch this September.
These vouchers will be worth around two-thirds of the cost of these improvements. The Treasury calculates that if a homeowner installs cavity wall and floor insulation costing £4,000, they would only pay around £1,320, with the remaining £2,680 coming from the government.
People on lower incomes would receive more, with the government covering the full cost of the eco-friendly improvements and the vouchers potentially worth up to £10,000 per household.
Double glazing can help protect the environment by reducing heat loss through the windows, so your heating is on less and your energy bills fall as a result. You’ll also find your home feels less draughty and you may well see that you have less condensation build-up on your windows.

According to the latest Halifax House Price Index, average property values dropped by 0.2 per cent between April and May 2020.
They also declined by 0.5 per cent over the last quarter between March and May compared with the preceding three-month period.
Russell Galley, managing director for Halifax, said this is the result of the “full impact of lockdown measures taking a firm grip on the UK property market by May”.
He stated the statistics, which represent the third consecutive monthly fall in house prices, reflects “a continued loss of momentum following what was a strong start to the year”.
While property values are still 2.6 per cent higher than they were in May last year, this annual increase is below the 4.1 per cent growth experienced between January 2019 and 2020.
After lockdown was introduced on March 23rd, estate agents were among the businesses that were forced to close, meaning homebuyers were unable to view new properties. Furthermore, surveyors were unable to carry out their inspections; lawyers could not proceed with transactions; and home removal companies could not move belongings from one house to another.
As a result, the property market came to a standstill, with very few homes being put up for sale. This has had a big impact on sales, although Mr Galley noted “with a limited number of transactions available, calculating average house prices remains challenging”.
Homeowners who want to boost their property value should consider upgrading their asset with bi-fold doors in Brighton.
More than 2,150 homes were added to RightMove in England, Wales and Scotland in just 24 hours following the announcement that homebuyers could now begin to look for their dream property.
Nearly half a million buyers and renters have been stuck in limbo since March 23rd, as they have been unable to pursue their property purchasing plans thanks to a ban on house moves.
Housing secretary Robert Jenrick stated: “Our clear plan will enable people to move home safely, covering each aspect of the sales and letting process from viewings to removals."
Now prospective buyers will be able to attend viewings, as long as they wear face masks and gloves and the vendors are happy to let them into their homes. While physical viewings are permitted, so long as social distancing guidelines are adhered to, many estate agents will conduct virtual viewings instead.
What’s more, surveyors, removal companies and tradespeople are allowed to begin working again, helping to kickstart the property market and enable buyers to progress with their purchase through to completion and the big move.
Homeowners who have been waiting to finish upgrades to their property, such as installing double glazing in Brighton, will now be able to do so. This will mean they can make their house more attractive before putting it on the market to help them earn as much as possible from the sale.
Mr Jenrick added: “This critical industry can now safely move forward, and those waiting patiently to move can now do so.”
The Argus reported on the crime, with the owner of the deli Michaela Myers telling the newspaper that she believes the graffiti is the work of hardline vegan activists.
“This is the second time our shop has been targeted by militant vegans, whose ignorance never ceases to amaze me,” she said.
Ms Myers said that it was shop manager Sam Gilbert who first saw the graffiti. He has been going into work during the Covid-19 pandemic to help the community by delivering boxes of groceries and other essentials to people who are self-isolating.
She added: “It’s really upsetting that people feel the need to do something like this. We’re just trying to make a living, help the community and get through this difficult time.” Ms Myers also said that targeting her shop was “ill-informed”, explaining that all the dairy products they stock come from local farmers with small herds of cattle who take animal welfare very seriously.
This isn’t the only instance of graffiti that’s been seen in the area recently. The Argus also reported earlier this month about anti-lockdown graffiti that has appeared in various places around the seaside town of Hove.
Councillor for Wish ward Robert Nemeth described the graffiti as “nonsensical” and told the newspaper that, while he understood some people would want to question the need to curtail freedoms, graffiti of this type is not the way to do it.

An article for Real Homes recently explained some of the main things to think about when you’re designing or revamping a conservatory.
In terms of glazing, there are more options than you might imagine. What you’re looking for in this part of your home is glass that’s able to block excess solar gain on sunny days (as much as possible) but keep the space warm when it’s colder outdoors.
The news provider cited low-e glass, which has an argon-filled cavity, as one of the top options for conservatories because it reflects heat thanks to its thin low-emissivity coating while argon significantly reduces that transfer of heat.
There are also insulated glazing products on the market that are designed to prevent a space like a conservatory from getting too hot or cold, the publication added.
Another thing to consider is self-cleaning glass, which is designed to gather dirt in such a way that it is washed off whenever it rains. However, the news provider noted that this typically has a slight tint to it, which is worth bearing in mind before investing in it for your conservatories in East Sussex.
About My Area recently pointed out that a conservatory can be a good investment in your home as well. The news provider noted that it can add up to five per cent to the value of homes outside of London, not to mention expanding your living space.
Some 2,700 businesses look set to benefit from this move, with direct debits cancelled and all eligible firms contacted to make sure that they know they don’t have to pay rates for the coming 12 months.
The local council is also prioritising the distribution of small business grants from the government, with £21.4 million in payments made to 1,300 businesses. Eligible companies are now being urged to get in touch via a secure portal if the council doesn’t have their bank details so that payments can be made as soon as possible.
Nancy Platts, council leader, said: “I want to thank businesses in the city for the way they are responding to this unprecedented situation and the many actions they are taking to support communities.
“We have a large number of small businesses in Brighton & Hove and I know how worried business owners are about their financial situation. This financial support is a lifeline for our small businesses which is why we are making grant payments and retail relief a priority.”
There are two business grant schemes you could benefit from - the Small Business Grants Fund and the Retail, Hospitality and Leisure Grants Fund. It has been made available to help small, rural, retail, leisure and hospitality firms with their business costs as a result of the disruption caused by the pandemic.
If you need emergency glazing in East Sussex, Channel Glazing a call toda.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) revealed HM Land Registry’s UK House Price Index for January 2020, which showed property values increased by 1.3 per cent over the preceding 12 months.
While prices increased by nearly £3,000 between January 2019 and 2020, taking the average value to £231,185, this is lower than the growth experienced in the year leading to December 2019.
During this period, house prices in the UK rose by 1.7 per cent.
A spokesperson for the ONS confirmed there has been a decline in UK house price growth over the last three years, which it states has been “driven mainly by a slowdown in the south and east of England”.
In fact, the east of England experienced the lowest annual growth out of the whole of the UK, with prices dropping by 0.6 per cent over the year to January 2020. Values in this region even declined by as much as 2.2 per cent since December 2019.
The south-east was not far behind, with values declining by 0.5 per cent over the 12 months and by 1.8 per cent from December 2019 to January 2020.
As a result, more homeowners are likely to be inclined to stay put in their properties and wait till the market improves before moving to a new house. In this case, they might consider fitting bi-fold doors in Brighton to help boost the value of their home.
This is because Halifax recently reported doing so could add more than £5,000 to the asking price of a house.
That’s according to the latest survey conducted by estate agent Jackson-Stops, which also revealed that nearly half would be happy to take on a major renovation project, Property Reporter revealed.
Interestingly, almost three-quarters of those questioned said that they’d rather move to a new, larger property than extend their existing home. This rose to 79 per cent among those in the 18 to 34 year old group.
Among the most desirable features in homes were high-speed broadband, a dedicated parking space, energy efficiency and period features, the news provider revealed.
If you’re moving into a home that needs renovation work, make sure you check the condition of your windows. Installing new double glazing in Brighton could be a good way to make it not only a more comfortable place to live, but also a more energy efficient one.
A recent article for the Irish Independent explained the differences between UPVC, timber and Aluclad framed windows, noting that all have their pros and cons. It noted that Aluclad requires low maintenance, like UPVC, but has a timber finish internally. Timber can be painted in a variety of ways, but it does require more maintenance than the other options.
If you do move into a home that requires renovations you’ll have to decide how best to carry those out within your budget and to ensure that they’re in-keeping with the style of the property. Balancing the energy efficiency of your home is another consideration, and a reason why it’s worth taking the time to think carefully about what type of glazing you’ll install.
The Guardian reports that repairs are going to cost £360m, but for those who weren't affected by the onslaught of wind and rain can affect properties in many other ways, so it is essential to undertake maintenance checks to protect your property against future storms.
After such a huge onslaught of rain, check your gutters and drains, they play a vital part in your home’s defences. Look for any holes or cracks which could have occurred during the storms and replace them as soon as possible. A leaking gutter that lets water drip down your walls can create structural damage to your property.
Look around the property for any hazards that could present a threat, for example, are there are any overhanging trees with branches which could damage windows, roof tiles or even people underneath them in a storm? Take note of any work that can be done now, because you don’t know when the next storms will come.
Not only will good quality double or triple glazed windows a sound investment for your home, but if they have been closed all winter, dirty locks and hinges could potentially seize. It’s advised to inspect them and apply a little oil to all moving parts. The same applies to your conservatory windows and doors, often only used in Summer and ignored all winter.
This will take minutes to do, but will vastly extend the life of your windows and doors.
If you have any old wooden doors and windows that got battered in the storms, get them repaired, repainted or replaced as soon as you can. Should there be further storms, these are your first defence against inclement weather.
If you need 24-hour glazing and boarding up services in Brighton, get in touch today.
Letting Agent Today recently shared the findings of a survey by lettings agency Carter Jonas, which found that improved energy efficiency is something that those renting houses are willing to pay more for.
This was one of three features that tenants in houses identified as something they’d be prepared to pay higher rents for, with a newly refurbished bathroom and kitchen at the top of the list and a garage in third place.
Spending money on new bi fold doors in East Sussex, or wherever your house is, as well as double glazing if this needs replacing, could therefore be a worthwhile investment as it will more than likely attract more tenants and allow you to charge higher rent for your property.
There are a number of ways in which you can help your tenants reduce their energy bills, however, and many don’t require much effort or expense on the part of the landlord.
Earlier this month, the Express shared some advice from the experts at boiler manufacturer Worcester Bosch, which pointed out that ensuring the thermostat for the central heating can be programmed is one of the easiest things to do.
Allowing tenants to tailor their heating to suit their lifestyle is one of the easiest ways for them to take control of their energy bills, the news provider noted.
Having radiators that can be turned off in individual rooms can also be helpful, as it means people don’t have to heat spaces they’re not using.
Heavy rain and 90mph winds knocked out power to homes in some areas. While the north of the UK bared the worst of the storm, with many areas flooded, Storm Ciara still brought devastation to Sussex.
Footage has been released of a tower crane in Worthing spinning in the high winds, while another crane was left “bent over like spaghetti” in London. The video showed the crane near Worthing seafront, above a 141-home development, spinning around in the 41mph gales. Sussex Police said they received “a number of reports” about the crane but reassured the public there was no cause for concern. “Sussex Police have been in contact with the developers and the cranes' safety mechanism is designed to let it move in the wind,” they said in a tweet.
Another twitter user in London posted a photo of a crane that was bent in half, totally folded over “like it’s made of spaghetti”.
Members of the public have been warned away from the fire-damaged Claremont Hotel in Eastbourne as a safety precaution to Storm Ciara. Eastbourne Borough Council tweeted advising people to keep away from the damaged building, “Due to the amber wind warning, please avoid the immediate area of the Claremont Hotel as there could be falling debris. We are on-site and monitoring the situation.”
They have updated the warning on Tuesday 11 February on twitter “… there was a further collapse of the hotel facade last night. Our team continue to work closely with hotel representatives and their demolition contractor to ensure the safest procedure for dealing with the remainder of the building.”
This is where gangs of criminals are flown over to the UK to go on a crime spree, targeting affluent areas like London and the Home Counties. High profile people are certainly not immune from this either, with Marcus Wareing recently targeted in this way, with criminals recently flying in from South America to target his home, with the value of the stolen items and damage to his property amounting to £33,711.
According to the London Evening Standard, the restaurateur’s £5 million property in Wimbledon was targeted while he and his wife were away, with a gold Rolex, two Omega watches, some Christian Louboutin shoes and jewellery including earrings, bracelets and gold chains all taken.
Thieves of this ilk are recruited in their home countries and then put on a plane to the UK, where they meet up with a contact who gives them phones and a car. Properties in wealthy areas have already been selected and the prospective burglars given instructions on how to get round security, where to enter the houses and which valuables to look for.
In 2018, the Times reported that Scotland Yard had discovered a criminal network where burglars are flown to the UK from Chile to raid upmarket houses, with 75 Chilean nationals arrested since the start of Operation Genie in 2017.

It is important to consider security for your shop more than ever, as a recent survey has shown that over 21,000 shop workers a year are attacked at work. That is 115 a day.
The British Retail Consortium carried out the survey and has highlighted the Government’s failure to do anything to address the problem.
Helen Dickinson OBE, Chief Executive of the British Retail Consortium said in a statement: “Violence against shop workers is a critical issue and any delays to tackling it will serve only to create more victims. No one should ever go to work in fear for simply carrying out their job. Retail workers are at the core of our communities across the country and these horrific crimes impact these skilled, passionate and determined individuals that make the industry what it is.”
The Consortium has highlighted that shop workers are more in danger than ever despite the sector paying out over £1 billion for security, and has called on the Government to ensure that there is some pay off for this layout by the industry.
As a result of this damning survey the British Retail Consortium, Usdaw and the Association of Convenience Stores are calling for much tougher sentences for people who attack shop workers as well as an increase in police numbers to help protect people at work.
They have called on Policing Minister, Kit Malthouse MP to respond to the results.
One of the first things to look at is your windows, and whether your double glazing is still doing its job.
Which? recently offered homeowners advice about how to select the right double glazing to help you keep your home warmer this winter. The first thing the organisation recommends is checking whether you need new windows at all, or whether your existing glazing could be repaired.
Another thing to consider is secondary glazing, which sees a separate, internal window fitted inside the existing one.
If you do decide that you need complete new double glazed windows, make sure you do your research. Read up on the materials used in the frames, and make sure you think about energy efficiency and new technology too.
This could be a chance to install windows with additional safety features, for instance, or opt for something like solar-controlled glass.
When you’re choosing a company to install your double glazing, make sure you look at reviews from previous customers and the company’s overall history. It’s also advisable to find an installer who is registered with Fensa or Certass, which are competent person schemes in the field of fenestration.
Flux Magazine recently named installing double glazing at your home as one of the top ways to save on your heating bills in the winter months. Other suggestions included insulating your pipes and having your boiler serviced.

But, as we all know, there is a dark side to the holiday season, which is the increased risk of home break-ins.
Every year, police issue warnings to homeowners to be extra vigilant and take care to ensure the security of their homes, whether they are out enjoying Christmas parties, or travelling further afield for the holidays.
Some forces have even gone as far to advise people not to place presents under their trees, or to put out “fake presents” if you’re concerned about potential burglars.
Obviously, it’s important to make sure your home is secure, and properly fitted double glazed windows are your first line of defence.
Additionally, the outside of your house should be well-lit and kept free from bushes, or other places where a burglar could hide and scope out your home.
CCTV cameras are also an excellent deterrent, because they let would-be intruders know that they are under surveillance and have an increased chance of getting caught if they attempt to break in.
Homeowners are advised not to leave keys near doors, as they can be fished out through the letterbox, and also to avoid leave keys hidden outside the property.
Other best practices include waiting until collection day to throw out packaging, as boxes for smartphones, tablets, and other high-value items are signals that can tempt potential thieves.
It’s also important to avoid the temptation to post your whereabouts on social media, whether you are out at a party or travelling.
Following these steps will keep your home safe and avoid the need for emergency double glazing in Brighton this Christmas !
Instead, make sure you keep your home as secure as possible this Christmas so that you don’t have to face up to burglaries over the festive season.
It is thought that nearly 450 burglaries a day take place in the weeks either side of Christmas. It is thought this happens for a number of reasons, such as people vacating their homes over the Christmas and New Year period to visit friends and family and the darker days and nights meaning burglars can do more under cover of darkness.
Here are some tips to help you avoid a burglary this Christmas:
Install a burglar alarm If you already have one make sure it works and is maintained.
Keep gifts out of view After all, Father Christmas doesn’t drop them off until you have the blinds shut on Christmas Eve does he?
Don’t overshare on social media Don’t make it clear if you are out of the house. You don’t know who is watching your local Facebook group after all.
Keep windows and doors locked This is imperative not only to keep burglars out, but also to ensure your insurance pays out if you are unfortunate enough to be burgled.
Dispose of packaging Don’t give burglars a heads up that there are expensive, new items in your home. And whatever you do don’t leave receipts around which will make items even more attractive to criminals.
According to figures from Co-op Insurance, 41 per cent of UK adults have faced a home burglary in the past, with 38 per cent admitting to having been victims of neighbourhood crime.
These findings could encourage more people to consider new double-glazing windows in Brighton to provide better security for their house, as these panes of glass are harder to break into than single-glazed windows.
The insurance provider also reminds homeowners to make sure their windows and doors are all locked properly, particularly as the evenings are getting darker earlier.
According to the report, more burglaries occur during the winter months, with the number of theft claims increasing by 35 per cent after the clocks go back.
“Our claims data shows that darker nights lead to more burglaries. As the nights draw in, we’re urging people to be vigilant when it comes to their personal safety, as well as the safety of their home,” Colin Butler, head of insurance at Co-op Insurance, stated.
The findings revealed the majority of burglaries occurred at night (28 per cent), while almost as many happened in the afternoon (24 per cent), and one-fifth took place in the evening.
Fridays were also found to be the most popular days for burglars to attack, so homeowners should take extra precautions then.
While older generations might have relied on neighbours to look out for any suspicious activity around their homes, this is unlikely to happen these days, as Co-op Insurance also reported that just 18 per cent of Brits say they know everyone who lives near them on their street.
In a world where convenience is at customers’ fingertips, it is more essential than ever to make sure that your shop front stands out from the crowd in order to attract clientele.
Not only that, but shop owners must also contend with competition from their neighbours to appeal to passing trade.
So, how can you make your shop front stand out from the crowd? Follow our tips for a welcoming and unique shop front that your customers will love.
1. Clear branding and signage First impressions are important, so you want it to be clear what you offer, even from a distance. Keep it simple and uncluttered, and if in doubt – less is usually more.
2. Respecting surroundings Consider adapting your brand logo and colours to the surroundings. An ultra-modernist look may stick out like a sore thumb in The Lanes, and many famous brands have been required to tone it down in more traditional surroundings.
3. Illumination Good lighting will make your shop front appear friendly and inviting, and is more likely to draw in passers-by, while poor illumination or badly-placed lights could leave people in the dark about what you offer! Conversely, excessive illumination may annoy neighbours and be off-putting to punters.
4. Accessibility Making sure your shop front is accessible is essential, and businesses are legally required to ensure equal access for everyone. A step-free entrance is recommended, but if this is not possible try installing a ramp instead.
5. Originality Eye-catching displays will help your shop front stand out from the crowd. The more original it is, the more likely it will stay in your customers’ memories, improving chances of a repeat visit.
While it can be easy to think it won’t happen to you, it’s much better to be safe than sorry and follow some of the advice that’s out there about how to make your home more secure. You’ll wish you had when you’re having to arrange for broken window glass repairs in Brighton after someone broke into your property.
This Is Money recently reported that insurance reports of thefts increase by 34 per cent in the winter months, according to figures from Co-Op Insurance.
The news provider also offered some advice on how to burglar proof your property. Having heavy duty locks not only on your front door, but also your windows and any external gates is essential.
Another tip is to install motion-sensing lights around the exterior of your property as this acts as a deterrent to burglars.
The Express also shared advice on home security recently. Adam Beckett, product director for Aviva UK, General Insurance, talked about the steps homeowners can take. Among them is making sure that your valuables aren’t left in sight of windows.
Security marking your property is also advisable, as this can help the police to return it to you should it be found after a burglary.
When you’re choosing new doors for your home, you may also want to steer clear of those with large glass panels, or make sure the doors you choose have laminated glass or are double glazed to make it difficult for thieves to break them.
House Beautiful recently shared the findings of the Home Essentials survey carried out by GoCompare. The annual research asks people the top features they look for in a home. Double glazing is second on the list, with only central heating ranked higher.
Some 76 per cent of people said that they want double glazing in a property. In third place, with 71 per cent, was secure windows and doors. So it seems that it’s not only the energy efficiency of glazing that’s important.
Completing the top five were a garden (also with 71 per cent) and a good, reliable broadband signal (61 per cent).
Other things that prospective buyers or renters are looking for are a good mobile phone signal (in sixth spot with 58 per cent), as well as access to local shops and amenities and a good energy efficiency rating.
The Residential Landlords Association (RLA) recently released some advice on how landlords can ensure any of their rental properties are secure as we come into National Home Security Month.
Among the top tips are ensuring that appropriate locks are fitted to all external doors, as well as to patio doors, and installing door chains. Given that security is an important consideration for people looking for a new home, this could also help landlords find tenants for their properties more easily.
Research by Leisure, a Range cooker specialist, and shared by Property Reporter revealed that 23 per cent of homeowners had replaced their double glazing in the past ten years. This makes it the fifth most popular home improvement project.
At the top of the list was replacing the bathroom, with nearly two-thirds of homeowners having updated this room in their home. Just over half (52 per cent) revealed they had also tackled their kitchen.
Installing a new boiler or central heating was the third most popular project, while redesigning the garden was in at fourth place. It just goes to show that while large-scale projects, such as adding an extension, might seem like a good option, they’re far from the only way to improve a home and add value.
Director of James Anderson Estate Agents Peter Davey told the news provider that there are some projects that will always boost a property’s value. “To help maximise the value of your property open-plan living, kitchen renovations and luxury bathrooms are the best improvements to make,” he stated.
If you’re revamping your kitchen - or your garden - you could explore adding bi fold doors in Brighton. This can allow you to bring the outside in when the weather is warm, giving you additional space for entertaining in the summer months.
Earlier this month, Real Homes highlighted some of the areas you should focus on if you’re hoping to sell your property. At the top of the list is the windows. 71 per cent of home buyers said that they paid attention to the condition of the glazing, so it’s important that your windows are well looked after if you’re hoping for a quick sale.
The Gazette reported how burglars broke into the shop in Paisley Road, Renfrew, near Glasgow on Thursday (September 19th) at 01:00.
Sergeant Barry McNaught from Renfrewshire community policing team told the newspaper: “They made off with quite a lot of stuff, including around £10,000 worth of cigarettes and other items.”
This criminal offence serves as a reminder to store owners to make sure their shop windows are of good quality and are hard to break into. However, these particular thieves entered the premises in an unusual way, as the police believe they gained entry through the roof.
Mr McNaught seemed positive the offenders will be caught, saying: “A lot of the incident was caught on CCTV but we are keen to hear from anyone who may have dash cam footage or who may have been around at the time.”
This is not the only Spar shop in Scotland to be targeted by thieves recently, as there was an attempted break-in at a similar store in Fort William in July.
According to the Press and Journal, the incident occurred at the Spar store on Grange Road on July 23rd. Thieves failed to gain access to the building or steal any goods, but they did damage the external door.
Constable Scott Williamson urged anyone to come forward who may have seen three people in dark clothing hanging around the store at 23:10 on that date, or any suspicious activity in the area.
According to the latest figures from the British Retail Consortium (BRC), the vacancy rate in July was 10.3 per cent, up from the 10.2 per cent recorded in the previous quarter.
Footfall in the high street also declined by 2.7 per cent in July, compared to the same month last year. Overall, retail footfall was down by an average of 1.9 per cent, with shopping centre footfall also declining while retail park footfall was the only one to experience an increase in July.
Chief executive of the BRC Helen Dickinson OBE called on the government to introduce measures, such as a freeze on business rates, to help businesses on the UK’s high streets.
“High streets and town centres play an important part in our local communities, and we should be concerned by the rise in empty store fronts,” she asserted.
Ms Dickinson pointed out that the country’s retail sector accounts for five per cent of the UK’s economy, but is responsible for paying 10 per cent of all business costs and 25 per cent of all business taxes. “The rising vacancy figure shows this is simply not sustainable,” she added.
Earlier this month, businesses in Brighton were warned to increase their security after a series of break-ins. Local police were increasing their patrols overnight and holding meetings with local partners in the city to try and tackle the issue.
If you need broken window glass repairs in Brighton, get in touch with us today.
Superintendent Ed De La Rue confirmed that the force have been working on tackling this issue head on, with specific patrols in place throughout the night, which is when the majority of the break-ins have occurred. It’s thought that some of them may have been carried out by the same people and a link between the incidents is now being looked into, the Brighton & Hove Independent reports.
Supt De La Rue went on to say that four people have now been arrested in connection with burglaries around the city centre, with local police now holding regular meetings with partners in the area to tackle the issue head on.
Thus far, two people have been charged in relation to shop break-ins in Hove, while four others have been arrested over burglaries in Brighton.
There are different types of retail burglary to be aware of if you run a business. Smash and grab, for example, involves the use of some kind of heavy object to break the window or tools to cut padlocks or grilles off. Goods from the window and the shop floor are both taken in this instance.
Opportunistic burglaries see perpetrators enter through a vulnerable point in the building, such as an insecure door, a window or a rooflight, typically only taking what can easily be carried away. More sophisticated burglaries include the cutting of an alarm system or setting off an alarm repeatedly so police stop responding, which means burglars have more time to act.

Earlier this week, Theresa May was taken over by Boris Johnson as Prime Minister of the UK, with the new PM promising to deliver a clean-cut Brexit by the deadline of October 31st.
While the political reshuffle will unsettle government in the short-term, those in the property industry believe it could be good news for the housing market.
Speaking with Property Wire, Lisa Simon, head of residential at Carter Jonas, said having Brexit looming over homeowners and buyers for the last three years has been “something of a grey cloud”.
Therefore, by being able to finally negotiate a deal with Brexit, this will help to create stability I the market again.
In addition to this, Ms Simon said Johnson’s tax relief promises could be “a potentially positive move for the market”. However, it all depends on whether he can get this passed and if he can even win the next general election with a public vote.
Camilla Dell, managing director at Black Brick, also emphasised the importance for the new PM to reverse stamp duty increases.
“There is now clear evidence that the stamp duty increases have started to dent the tax take,” she stated, adding the three per cent surcharge and one per cent additional fee for foreign buyers “has had the effect of pouring glue into the market and resulting in a dramatic fall in the number of transactions happening on an annual basis”.
Homeowners who cannot wait for legislation changes or the finalisation of Brexit plans to put their house on the market could consider getting new double-glazing in East Sussex to boost the value of their property and make it more appealing to potential buyers.
Saxophones UK on Farningham Road, Crowborough, was broken into between the hours of 2330 on Saturday July 13th and 0345 on Sunday July 14th, Sussex Police has confirmed.
The intruders managed to get into the warehouse and walked away with the high-value items worth several thousands of pounds.
Sergeant Amy Mason of Wealden Police said in a statement: “We would like to hear from anyone who may have seen or heard suspicious activity on the night of the crime, or recalls seeing anything [unusual] in the area in the days leading up to it.”
Anyone who might have some information for the police have been asked to phone 101, quoting serial 248 of 14/07.
There is a possibility the burglars have targeted the store previously, as earlier thefts have also resulted in thousands of pounds’ worth of instruments being stolen.
This comes after silverware worth £100,000 was stolen from the University of Sussex’s sacristy.
The burglar broke into the premises at Falmer, near Brighton, on Friday December 7th between 1350 and 1420.
Police are looking for a man in his 30s of mixed race, who is thought to be six-foot tall, bald with some facial stubble, and of a medium build.
Having not being able to locate the thief over the last few months, the university is now offering a £10,000 reward to anyone who can help solve the case.
If you’ve been broken into, our emergency shop front glazing in East Sussex can secure your property as quickly as possible.
Zoopla recently reported, the average time it takes for homeowners to purchase a new property is 20.8 years, which is considerably greater than the 8.33-year turnover during the 1980s.
Laura Howard, a spokeswoman for Zoopla, said: “These results contradict a common assumption that UK neighbourhoods are becoming more transient.”
Those living in Kensington and Chelsea are less interested in moving home than anywhere else in the UK, with 35.5 years being the average time homeowners stay in their properties.
However, homes in Dartford and south Derbyshire typically see new owners every 15 years – five years less than the UK average.
Ms Howard noted that Brits might be remaining in their houses for longer as it is becoming harder for them to buy a bigger residence due to increasing property prices.
“Many people are unwilling or unable to take on the cost of the ‘next rung up’,” she said.
Of course, those who do plan on making their house a ‘forever home’ need to make sure they look after it well so it does not depreciate in value when they do come to sell.
One of the best ways to do this is by installing double-glazing in Brighton, as this will trap in heat, block out noise, and make the home look up-to-date.
Double-glazed windows tend to last around 20 years, according to the Centre for Sustainable Energy, so if they have not been replaced recently and you plan on staying in your residence for a couple of decades, it is worth getting them updated.
Britain was set to leave the EU on March 29th; however, due to being unable to agree on an exit strategy, this date was moved till October 31st to give politicians more time to establish a Brexit plan.
Since then, property values have risen, growing by 0.7 per cent between March and April 2019, according to the latest UK House Price Index.
HM Land Registry’s latest figures showed the average cost of a home in England rose to £245,128 by April 2019 thanks to this small increase.
These figures were particularly supported by a 2.4 per cent boost in London’s property prices during the course of the month, taking the average price of a residence in the capital to £471,504.
A house price increase in the city came as a surprise to property experts, as values had been consistently falling here. Indeed, the report found London to have experienced the largest annual price fall in the country, declining by 1.2 per cent between April 2018 and 2019.
An article in The Teleraph recently suggested the property ‘slump’ in the capital might be coming to an end, after buyers were previously deterred by changes in taxation, high prices, and uncertainty over Brexit.
However, she stated: “As the cost of buying in the capital realigns with average salaries, experts predict that demand will bounce back.”
One way to boost property values is by installing double-glazing in Brighton, as energy-efficient home improvement measures will be attractive to prospective buyers who might be tempted to spend more.
It can take weeks and even months for the project to be completed, so what you should decide first is whether or not this is the right time for you and your family to face serious upheaval for your home and garden.
Planning it out properly will help minimise the potential stress and bother, however, so if you’re determined to go ahead make sure you know exactly what you’re in for. Always seek out at least three quotes from different firms so you can be assured that you’re getting a fair price for the work - and it could also help with negotiations if you have this information to hand.
You’ll also need to be very clear what you plan to use the conservatory for as this will inform all sorts of design decisions. It pays to be as flexible as you can with the different forms, materials and styles, however, as this can help to keep costs down.
Typically, you won’t need to have planning permission for a conservatory but check to make sure if you live in a conservation area or national park, if the new extension won’t be at ground level or if your house is terraced or has already been extended before.

But it can be difficult to make the most of this space, especially if you haven’t rearranged your furniture and had a play around with the layout in a while.
A recent article for Real Homes offered some advice on how to make the most out of your living room layout.
The first tip is to find the focal point of the room. In some homes that might be the fireplace, or you may want to make your TV the focus of the space. Decide this before you start arranging furniture and other items.
Next you need to think about whether you want to have an open-plan, broken-plan or living room only space. If you’re thinking about the broken-plan option, you need to consider how you’ll divide the space to give different areas different purposes.
Sliding or double doors can help with this if you want to have the option of shutting off certain spaces sometimes, but opening them up at others. If you have access to your garden from your living room, fit bi fold doors in Brighton to allow you to bring the outdoors in during the warmer months of the year.
If you want some inspiration of how to make an open-plan living space work in your home, take a look at how one couple transformed their 1960s property. The Daily Mail highlighted the renovation project carried out by a family in Wiltshire who removed almost all the interior walls and fitted wrap around windows to let more light into the space.
A recent report by the Climate Change Committee (CCC) stressed that it’s possible for the country to meet this target politicians act now and make some bold changes.
One of the areas that needs to be addressed is the condition of the country’s building stock, with the CCC noting that energy efficiency measures and low-carbon heating technology will need to be introduced across the UK’s building stock if it is to hit this target.
“Serious plans are needed to clean up the UK’s heating systems, to deliver infrastructure for carbon capture and storage technology and to drive transformational change in how we use our land,” the report stated.
As well as addressing issues with heating systems, Environment Journal pointed out that replacing inefficient windows and installing insulation are other steps that will be needed if the country’s homes are to play their part in delivering net zero carbon emissions.
If you’re looking for new bi fold doors in Brighton, pick the most efficient model you can find. This will not only mean you’re doing your part to help meet the environmental challenges we’re facing but will also save you money on your heating bills and make your home a more comfortable environment to live in.
A recent survey by Swinton Insurance has revealed what people look for in their forever home, with Property Wire reporting on the findings. The specialist insurer found that the average person who’s just getting on the property ladder intends to live in a three-bedroom home for most of their lives.
However, when they’re buying for the first time, they typically purchase a two-bedroom semi-detached house.
Interestingly, people view what makes a forever home differently. 53 per cent believe this is down to its location, while two in five said that the memories made there are what determine whether it’s a forever home or not.
On average, it’s estimated that people will have owned three properties by the time they turn 65. The research also found that people tend to spend around five years in their first property before moving on.
Interestingly, those under the age of 45 revealed that they’re more likely to prioritise getting their wifi access working than sorting out their home security when they move in somewhere new.
However, it also seems that we’re not averse to splashing out on DIY, with research from NAEA Propertymark recently revealing that UK homeowners spent an average of £8,000 each doing up their homes over the last five years.
Among the home improvements recommended by the organisation are installing double glazing and replacing your front door.

Kent Online reported how the 30-year-old from Hurst Green, East Sussex, was tracked by a police dog with regards to a break-in at a SPAR in Staplehurst last week (March 12th).
The attempted burglary of the store resulted in a car smashing through the front window at 01:00.
While the thieves left empty-handed, they caused severe damage to the convenience store.
After the incident, a Land Rover Discovery, which had been reported as stolen, was found nearby in Jaggard Way. It had been set on fire, which the emergency services put out.
Following a detailed search of the area, police found and arrested the suspected criminal. However, since his arrest, the man has been released pending further investigation.
Kent Police are currently asking the public for more information on the incident, or who might have CCTV or dashcam footage that could help with their inquiry.
This comes after a West Sussex store was broken into at the end of last month. The Sayers Common Shop was smashed into at 04:30 on February 26th.
Sussex Police has released CCTV images of a man they would like to speak to in connection with the burglary, which resulted in a loss of £300 worth of cigarettes, revealed Mid Sussex Times.
It is also thought the break-in caused £500 worth of damage, as the culprit used a hammer to make his way into the premises.
Shop owners who face break-ins need to make sure they repair their broken glass as quickly as possible to avoid other thefts from occurring while their store is unsecure.

Environmental benefits of this kind of building strategy include improving air and water quality, protecting natural resources and enhancing benefits of ecosystems and biodiversity.
So what can be done to help make buildings already in existence greener? Here are a few ideas you might like to consider if you want to retrofit your home this year.
Double glazing is a great way of making your house more eco-friendly because it’s amazing for cutting heat loss, keeping it in during the winter so you can have the heating on less.
Solar panels
Solar electricity is another good option because it’s renewable and won’t release any harmful emissions. You can have photovoltaic panels fitted on the roof of your house to convert sunlight into electricity.
Cavity wall insulation
Insulating your walls effectively will prevent heat loss so energy isn’t wasted. Older properties will likely have solid walls, but these can also be insulated either from the inside or the outside, so don’t worry if you’ve got a period home or similar.
Use smart technology
You can easily track your gas and electricity usage using a smart meter so you can see what’s being wasted where, which will help you enact a few changes where necessary.
An article for Cycling Industry News recently explored what bike shops can do to improve their security, but some of the advice is valid regardless of what products you sell.
One option that’s proved to be particularly effective is a DNA intruder spray system. These work by coating an intruder in a spray that’s unique to each store. They’re not visible until you’re placed under UV light, when it shows up.
What’s more, the spray can stay on skin or clothes for weeks or even months, so it allows police to put a criminal at the scene of a break in if they get them in custody. The news provider noted that Manchester police started using the system last year and in nine months saw crime in the city fall by 24 per cent.
None of the retailers that participated in the scheme were targeted by thieves in the 12 months following its introduction either.
One tip that’s specifically for bike stores is to make sure that they register all of their stock with BikeRegister. This national scheme allows people to check if bikes have been stolen before buying them and gives retailers a way to trace stolen stock that people are trying to move on.
If the worst does happen and your store suffers a break in, make sure you know who to call to carry out broken window glass repairs in East Sussex.
And it’s not just physical threats that retailers have to worry about. Last month, an article for IT Pro Portal revealed that retailers boosted their spending on cyber security more in December than at any other time of the year.
According to comparethemarket.com’s latest research, the amount Brits overpay is not insignificant either, totalling £1.4 billion.
This is due to those who are unaware about when their fixed energy tariff expires and are then rolled on to the standard variable energy tariff, which is often much more expensive.
Indeed, ten per cent of UK homeowners do not know which tariff they are on, and 33 per cent of those on fixed deals do not know when this is set to come to an end, Money Pages reported.
Head of energy at the price comparison site Peter Earl stated that while Brits like to watch what they are spending, “when it comes to energy, many people have no idea where to begin”.
He noted that several households are losing touch of their energy bills because the market is becoming too complex for them.
“This leads to significant, but totally avoidable, rise in the cost of energy for millions of homes,” Mr Earl commented.
As well as using comparethemarket.com’s new EnergyCheck service, which alerts customers to potential savings and when their tariff is set to expire, Brits can make their homes as energy-efficient as possible to cut their heating bills.
For a long-term solution, homeowners might be tempted to upgrade their double glazing windows in East Sussex. By having good-quality windows that block out the cold and trap heat inside, households could see a dramatic reduction in the amount of money they spend on energy.
The organisation announced this month that it intends to make changes that will benefit people living in 1,000 areas around the country that are affected by noise pollution as a result of busy main roads near their homes.
While many of the measures will involve the agency installing noise barriers and laying new, quieter road surfaces, it will also be providing new double glazing to some homes, free of charge to homeowners.
The money comes from a £39 million fund that will help it carry out this work by spring of 2020. So far, over 600 homes have benefited from new double glazing since the scheme began in 2015.
Principal noise adviser at Highways England Ian Holmes commented: “Our roads also have an impact on the people who live near them and I’m pleased we’ve been able to reduce traffic noise levels for over 40,000 roadside residents since 2015 as part of our noise reduction schemes.”
Even if you don’t qualify for new double glazing in Brighton as part of Highways England’s scheme, you may want to make the change in your home anyway.
Last year, the Guardian reported that long-term exposure to road traffic noise can have a negative impact on our health, and can be particularly bad for our cardiovascular system.
That was the finding of research conducted by Dr Yutong Samuel Cai, an epidemiologist at Imperial College London, who analysed the health data of 356,000 people in Britain and Norway. He concluded that there is evidence noise pollution from traffic can lead to heart attacks
Local leaders are being invited to apply for money from the fund to help revitalise their town centres.
Initially, £55 million will be spent on restoring heritage town centres, helping to bring historical buildings back into use, such as by converting them into new work spaces or cultural venues.
Jake Berry, MP and high streets minister, said that it’s important to acknowledge that the UK’s high streets are changing. However, he stressed that it’s vital to make them community hubs rather than focusing on them as retail destinations.
“We have to support investment in infrastructure, boosting local economies and ensuring people are able to get the most out of their local high streets,” he asserted.
The government will also create a High Street Task Force in 2019 to help the towns bidding for funding to make the most of the cash they’re awarded.
It’s clear that the UK’s high streets need some support, after a report from the Centre for Retail Research predicted that a further 10,000 stores will close in 2019 across the UK.
Professor Joshua Bamfield, from the centre, told the Express that smaller, independent retailers are likely to be hit hardest because they’ll “have to pay high rates and wages while not getting as much business”.
Research conducted recently by Anglian Home Improvements and shared by Property Reporter revealed that windows are among the top parts of a property that leak heat. Doors, chimneys and roofs were also identified by the company as areas that lose heat.
So, if you’re looking for ways to keep your heating bills down but still want to ensure your home is nice and warm, what can you do?
Things like drawing your curtains in the evenings, and even replacing curtains with ones made of heavier fabric, can help to keep the heat in, but won’t address the root cause of the problem.
If it’s been a while since you had new windows fitted, this could be a good place to start. Installing new double glazing in Brighton could make more of a difference than you may think. According to the news provider, if your glazing is rated B or below for energy efficiency, it will be losing more heat each year than it generates.
That means swapping to A-rated double glazing will make a big difference to the temperature of your home. Don’t forget about your doors either. If you’ve got old doors that let drafts in around the frames it could be time to get them replaced. Also consider smaller fixes, like covers for keyholes and letter boxes.
A recent blog for the Energy Saving Trust suggested that looking at your heating settings could also help you save money at this time of year. For instance, your room thermostat should be set at a comfortable temperature - between 18 and 21 degrees C. Don’t be tempted to turn it up when it gets colder, or in an attempt to get the room to heat up more quickly.
The Met Office has warned Brits that much of the UK will experience a drop in temperatures thanks to cold air from Scandinavia and Eastern Europe. The east will be first affected as the blast travels across the North Sea, while those on higher ground have already seen snow settle.
Business owners who have not yet invested in fixing their broken glass windows in Brighton are likely to be urgently trying to do so in order to stay as warm as possible during this winter chill.
Speaking with the Express, the Met Office’s Aidan McGivern stated: “We’re likely to see sleet and snow over the South Downs, North Downs, the Welsh Mountains, the Pennines, the Grampians and maybe over some of the lumps and bumps of Northern Ireland.”
He added that sleet and rain will result in icy conditions even on lower ground throughout the country, and the news provider reported how Croydon in London has already been hit by slushy snow.
Although temperatures are expected to remain in the single digits across most of the country, it could feel much colder due to the icy winds with speeds of up to 50mph.
Last year’s Beast from the East saw temperatures drop to -15C due to another cold blast from Europe that lasted until the end of March.
Having double-glazed windows will certainly help, they keep the cold air locked out and the heat in, meaning commercial buildings can stay warm and owners can save money on heating bills.
The regulator has revealed it will enforce a limit on what energy providers can charge from January 1st 2019, which it hopes will protect around 11 million customers in the UK.
The cap will cut consumers’ bills by £1 billion, saving each household around £76 a year on average.
Chief executive of Ofgem Dermot Olan said: “The price cap will ensure that whether energy costs rise or fall suppliers are not feathering their nest and changes in energy prices will reflect the underlying costs to heat and light our homes.”
He went on to say those who want to reduce their bills even more should take other steps to do so, such as by shopping around for better deals.
According to Citizens Advice, homeowners could also improve their home’s energy efficiency, which will limit the amount of heat lost and reduce their dependency on central heating to stay warm.
Gillian Guy, chief executive of the organisation, stated: “Simple steps, such as better insulation or heating controls, are a good place to start.”

Installing double-glazing in your Brighton home, for instance, is a great way to cut down on costs, as these windows trap heat within the house and prevent cold air from getting in.
The Irish Times recently offered some advice on the top things to do to winter-proof your home this year.
One thing to watch out for is draughty windows, with Ruth Kennelly of RK Designs suggesting that investing in curtains with a fleece lining will “make a huge difference to the warmth of rooms”.
If you have the money available to spend on new double glazing in East Sussex, it could be well worth the expense and hassle if you can get it fitted in the coming weeks before the coldest of the winter weather arrives.
Ted Laverty, managing director of onlinetradesman.ie, told the news provider that now is also the time to inspect your insulation, particularly around pipes. Making sure they’re properly insulated can prevent them from freezing and bursting as the weather gets colder, he explained.
For a few homey touches, you should think about layering throws and rugs within your home to create a cosy atmosphere, Lisa Marconi, co-owner of Dust Interiors recommended.
Funding large-scale home improvement projects, like installing new energy efficient windows, can be expensive and may not be something you can do this winter. But by next year you could find that you’re able to get help to finance this work through a new green mortgage being offered by E.ON and BNP Paribas.
These financial products are designed to give people a way of funding green home improvements, making their properties more energy efficient.
According to Business Matters Magazine, 71 per cent of the UK’s housing stock, which equates to around 19 million homes, fall below an energy performance certificate (EPC) rating of C.
That means there’s a lot of work to do to improve the energy efficiency of the country’s housing stock. However, homeowners are often faced with large financial costs when they try to make improvements to their properties, and this is creating a barrier to the adoption of more energy efficient products.
Upgrades could involve anything from new double glazing in Brighton to fitting loft insulation. Chief executive at E.ON UK Michael Lewis commented: “We need to find ways to radically increase interest and action on energy efficient homes, but property owners often face a significant financing barrier when wishing to do so.”
The green mortgages will be available to first-time buyers, movers and remortagers who want to use some of the money to improve the energy efficiency of their home. The funding for the improvement loan will come from BNP Paribas, while E.ON will help homeowners determine the best measures to implement and provide a managed service to install them.
If you’re not quite ready for large-scale home renovations, take a look at some of the tips on how to become more energy efficient offered by The Sun earlier this month. The newspaper suggested simple things like insulating pipes and replacing standard light bulbs with energy efficient models, noting that these can make a bigger difference than you might think.
This is according to a new report compiled by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) and Nottingham Trent University.
The organisation noted that carrying out a deep retrofit of existing housing involves adding solar panels and local micro generation, as well as insulation, ventilation and sustainable heating systems. But this is necessary because 80 per cent of the properties we’ll inhabit in 2050 have already been constructed.
IET built environment lead Rick Hartwig said that the government needs to establish a national retrofit programme, because meeting the 2050 targets set by the Climate Change Act relies on the UK’s housing having zero carbon emissions from space and water heating, and space cooling.
Among the barriers to achieving this are currently low customer demand, the expense of such retrofits and a lack of the initial financing required to start such a national programme.
If you live in an older property it’s certainly worth exploring whether new double glazing in East Sussex could help reduce your home’s carbon footprint. This would also improve the energy efficiency of your property, making it cheaper to heat in the winter and also a healthier place to live.
It’s not only homeowners who could benefit from more energy efficient homes. Last month Business Matters suggested that retailers could experience the equivalent of a five per cent boost in sales by introducing energy efficiency measures to cut store heating bills by one-third.
However, if you think carefully about the energy efficiency measures you have in place, you could save a considerable amount of money. In fact, Business Matters recently suggested that cutting your store heating bills by one-third is the equivalent to achieving a five per cent boost in sales.
As well as ensuring that you’re using energy efficient glazing for your shop fronts in Brighton , there are a few other things you can try to cut your heating bills.
One is to install blinds over your windows, which can be closed in the early evening, helping to retain the heat in your store overnight.
In terms of your thermostat, the news provider noted that reducing your store’s temperature by just one degree C can reduce your energy consumption by eight per cent. And customers may welcome this too.
When it’s cold outside they’ll typically be wearing thick clothing and lots of layers, so you need to ensure your shop isn’t uncomfortably hot for them when they step through the door. Another top tip is to make sure your staff have practical uniforms, so that they can stay warm in a slightly cooler environment.
But heating isn’t the only place where retailers could make a saving. Business Matters noted in another article that choosing the right energy efficient lighting technology could save up to 15 per cent on a business’ energy costs.
By installing insulation onto all pipes that carry hot water and around your wa-ter tank you can help to prevent lost heat. Insulation can be picked up cheaply and you’ll be able to cut it to size and fit it yourself. Research by MoneySu-perMarket has also shown that by carrying out energy saving changes to your home you could potentially be adding around £25,000 to its value when it comes to re-sale.
If you’re planning on staying in your property for a long time then it can be worth investing in cavity wall insulation. It’s great for keeping heat inside your home and can also help to combat condensation build up. Costs for installa-tion will vary upon the size of the property its being installed into.
Energy efficiency in a property is measured by EPC which stands for energy performance certificate, which is graded from letters A-G with A being the most energy efficient.
According to the latest Halifax House Price Index, the quarter leading to August 2018 saw a greater rise in property values than the previous three-month period when they grew by 3.3 per cent.
This also represents a monthly growth of 0.1 per cent from July this year, and an increase of 1.9 per cent from the preceding quarter of March to May 2018.
Russell Galley, managing director at Halifax, said: “While the pace of employment growth has recently slowed, a low unemployment rate and a gradual pickup in wage growth are helping to support household finances.”
He noted that “historically low” interest rates, as well as a limited supply of new houses coming on to the market, are helping to maintain property prices.
This will come as good news to those who already own a home of their own, as they can watch their house or flat increase in value over time, enabling them to earn a greater profit when they come to sell.
Other ways they could bolster the value of their property is by taking on renovation projects and improving the structure and aesthetics of the house so it is more appealing to prospective buyers in the future.
However, according to Which?, homeowners need to be careful not to overspend on their redecoration plans, which almost a quarter tend to do.
One improvement you should not scrimp on quality though is when hiring double-glazing services in Brighton, so you can be confident you get the best new windows in your property that will keep the cold and noise out and improve your energy efficiency.
This is particularly important if you think you’ll be moving within a few years. Property Reporter recently highlighted a survey by Hitachi Personal Finance, which looked at some of the home renovations that can end up costing you money.
Among the examples was knocking down walls to make larger spaces, and in particular reducing the number of bedrooms your home has.
While this might be a great way to give one bedroom some extra space, you’ll find that a three-bedroom home will always go on the market for less than a four-bedroom home in the same area.
Bola Ranson, founder of commercial property estate agency Ranson, told the news provider that sometimes over-personalisation can hurt your chances of making a quick house sale. He cited the example of a couple who’d decorated their living space in a very gothic style, but then struggled to find a buyer as a result.
If you do want to do some work to improve your property and boost its value, a top tip is to look at how you can get a better Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating.
Research published recently by BLP insurance found that 78 per cent of Brits would look at the energy efficiency of a property when looking for a new home.
Investing in new windows in Brighton could therefore be a good option to reduce your heating bills this winter and help sell your home in the future.
A survey conducted by Which? found that almost one-quarter of homeowners who carried out renovations had spent more than they initially planned on their projects.
The works most likely to break the bank were double-height extensions, creating open-plan spaces and constructing a single-storey extension. Completing the top five were loft conversions and garage conversions.
All of these projects involve many elements, so it’s easy to see why so many people go over budget. Taking the time to get multiple quotes for the project, as well as checking whether there are cheaper options for any of the elements of your renovation is advisable.
You may want to find glazing services in Brighton yourself, for instance, if you’re building an extension, rather than simply relying on the contractor suggested by your builder.
Whatever home improvement project you’re planning, Which? recommends having an extra ten per cent of the cost set aside to allow for a little overrun in the cost. That means you’ve got some spare cash should you need it for something unforeseen, or if you don’t need it for that you could upgrade some of the fixtures and fittings instead.
Given that almost half of homeowners surveyed recently by Sellhousefast.uk stated that video doorbells and smart home security systems are on their list of things to buy, you could even put any excess cash from your home renovation project towards improving your home security.
But it seems that security is where many households see the greatest value in this technology. Showhouse recently highlighted research conducted by Sellhousefast.uk, which revealed that video doorbells and security systems are the pieces of technology people are most likely to invest in over the next one to two years.
In fact, 47 per cent of those surveyed said that these items were on their list of things to buy and install at their homes. Next on the list was smart lighting, with 45 per cent of respondents stating that they plan to fit this sort of system to their home.
Both of these things can help boost home security. The smart security system has obvious benefits, while the smart lighting system will allow you to control your home’s lights even when you’re not in.
However, smart devices are great but you still need to take care of the physical security of your home to ensure that you deter would-be thieves when you’re not there. Investing in new UPVC doors in East Sussex could be just one thing to do to ensure your property is as difficult as possible to break into.
One security expert has recently offered advice to readers of the Express about how to make sure their homes are protected. He advises investing in security cameras as well as a home alarm system.
Don Aviv told the newspaper that one of the best ways to protect your home is to make friends with your neighbours though. Investing in strong windows, doors and locks is another recommendation, with Mr Aviv stating that you’ll “do a tremendous amount to protect your home” if you spend money on these things.
The Wilts and Gloucestershire Standard recently highlighted research carried out by BLP Insurance, which found that 78 per cent of Brits think that environmental credentials are important when choosing a new home.
In fact, energy efficiency was one of the main advantages seen in new-build homes, as opposed to older properties.
The organisation found that energy efficient hot water and central heatings were a top priority for buyers, followed by double glazing and solar panels.
If you have an older property that you’re planning to put on the market you may want to fit new double glazing in East Sussex to help boost its appeal to prospective buyers.
Chief executive officer at BLP Insurance Kim Vernau said that this is a trend that’s likely to grow because more and more people are concerned about environmental issues.
“Initiatives such as the Energy Efficient Mortgages Action Plan (EeMAP) will help finance an increase in sustainable homes by incentivising building owners to improve the energy efficiency of their properties,” he stated.
Last month, Environmental Protection offered some advice on how to make your home more energy efficient. Among the top tips were investing in curtains or energy-efficient blinds for windows, or even a window film to make the glazing more energy efficient.
But this can be an invitation to thieves, and one police force has been reminding people about basic home security during the heatwave.
The Bury Free Press reported on the advice from Suffolk Police, which shared some top tips on how to keep your home cool without compromising its security.
It’s easy to see why you’d want to have your windows open to let in some air, but one of the top pieces of advice is to use window limiters. This means that they can be open to let a draft in, but can’t be fully opened - and therefore can’t be used to gain access to your home.
The police force pointed out that you should use these even when you’re in your property. Making sure that you close and lock all your windows when you go out is also essential.
Hiding your valuables so that they’re not in view from any of your windows is another top tip, as is keeping your spare keys somewhere secure, not just hidden under the doormat or a plant pot.
Of course, some burglars will go to extreme lengths to access a property if they think it’s worth their while. If your home is damaged during a break in, don’t delay broken window glass repairs in East Sussex.
This comes as the latest crime figures from the Office for National Statistics show that burglaries across the UK were up by six per cent in the first quarter of this year, compared to a year earlier.
The Independent shared an article written by Sarah Rodgers, a professor of epidemiology at the university, explaining that their research found an improvement in people’s health when their homes were improved to be less damp.
Installing new windows and doors, replacing old central heating systems and fitting loft and wall insulation were all cited as home improvements that can make a difference to people’s health.
The survey started by assessing the health of those aged 60 and over who were living in council houses, some of which had recently had improvements to meet the quality standard, and others that had not.
They recorded a 39 per cent decrease in emergency hospital admissions for cardiovascular and respiratory illnesses, in addition to lower rates of admissions for falls and burns, for those who were living in homes that had recently had improvements made.
Ms Rodgers added that although the research only looked at major hospital admissions, “in the long term their reduction is likely to be only the tip of the iceberg in terms of saving the NHS money and resources”.
Another good reason to upgrade your windows is to make your home more energy efficient and save money on your energy bills.
Earlier this year, the Welsh government announced that it would be offering applicants for the help-to-buy scheme in the country bigger loans if they purchased an energy-efficient property.

The survey by Independent Network quizzed 2,000 people, with a range of reasons given for any arguments caused by a home renovation project.
The main bone of contention was the amount being spent, although some respondents admitted they’d argued over whether they should even be having the work done at all.
Home improvement projects can cover anything from redecorating to fitting a new bathroom or kitchen. Of course, there is some work that you may need to get done whether you like it or not, such as calling in professionals to replace broken glass in Brighton.
Although it was women who were more likely to suggest a home improvement project, it’s men who are generally expected to source quotes.
70 per cent of the men questioned said they had been left to contact companies and trades people. But it’s worth putting in the effort at this stage, as 53 per cent of those surveyed said that they regretted not getting more quotes and taking a bit longer to shop around.
Having a new bathroom installed was found to be the most popular home improvement project, with fitting new central heating or a boiler, as well as new double glazing, also in the top five.
Last month, research from GoCompare named a new central heating system and new double glazing among the top features that home buyers look for when viewing a property.
The Northern Echo recently offered some advice to DIY newbies after speaking to buying manager and DIY champion at Robert Dyas Andrew Georgiou.
First on the list is to plan everything. That means working out not only what you’re going to do, but what tools and other supplies you need to complete the job.
This is also a useful point to consider whether you’re up to the task - if you think the DIY job you’ve picked looks a bit beyond you at this stage, consider a smaller project or call in some help.
If you’re going to be drilling holes, it’s vital that you use the right kind of drill bit for the task in hand. You’ll need a harder drill bit if you’re going to be putting holes in a wall compared to a wooden door, for instance. If you find that you’re having to press on the drill to make a hole, that probably means you’re not using the right bit.
You don’t need to make everything brand new either - sometimes sprucing up can be just as effective as replacing (and a fraction of the cost). Look into all your options before you rush to buy and fit new fixtures or appliances in your home.
But if you’re ever in doubt - or you know a project involves more than DIY, like attic conversions in Derby - it’s best to call in a professional . According to the news provider, professionals correct an estimated £3.3 million-worth of DIY botched jobs every year.
Recent research by the Federation of Master Builders found that many young people are more confident in their DIY abilities than you may think. In fact, over half have carried out basic DIY tasks such as hanging a picture or painting walls.
According to The Argus, the street is having issues with open drug-dealing and use, as well as homelessness, antisocial behaviour and litter. The area which sits in Kempshott, just before Brighton’s shopping attraction The Lanes, has been described by local traders as “lawless”.
New Chief Inspector Rachel Swinney has heard many complaints about the area, especially in terms of a lack of visaible policing on the streets. While she is looking for long-term fixes to the homeless problem in the area, she has said that any aggressive begging or open-drug dealing in the area will be dealt with swiftly.
Lloyd Russell Moyle, MP For Kempshott, has said that a clear strategy with policing is needed: “Community policing in the form of PCSOs who really know the area and are on patrol at crucial times, such as Friday and Saturday nights, would make a big difference,” he said. He implores that the area has a dedicated team, rather than a “revolving door” of officers.
The MP recalls the success of campaigns such as Operation Blitz in Peacehaven, which has seen a 30 per cent decrease in crimes over the last 10 months, however he has concerns over simply moving this from one area to another.
Litter, in the meantime, has been blamed on budget cuts for street cleaners, as well as the homelessness problem.
But now the Welsh government has taken the lead by offering help-to-buy applicants a bigger loan if they purchase an energy efficient property.
The logic behind offering bigger mortgages to those with greener homes is that their energy bills will be lower, thereby giving them more disposable income and more money each month to pay back their loan.
Wales minister for housing and regeneration Rebecca Evans explained that the government is hoping lenders will follow their lead with the scheme.
“We know that energy spending can be a major household outgoing, which is why we want to make energy efficiency part of the consideration when people look to buy a home in Wales,” she stated.
For homeowners, it could therefore be worth investing in new double glazing in Brighton to make a property easier to sell, not to mention reducing your own energy costs in the meantime. If you this scheme is rolled out more widely, it could also mean you’re able to borrow more should you decide to remortgage your home.
According to research published recently by Sainsbury’s Bank Home Insurance, 14 per cent, or one in seven, of UK adults admitted to having a DIY mishap in the last three years.
The most common problem was causing damage to flooring with tools or other equipment, or spilling paint. Five per cent of those surveyed said that they’d experienced such issues as a result of their DIY efforts.
Other issues cited by homeowners included damaging internal walls and hammering a nail into a pipe which led to flood damage in their property.
Of course, when you’re using power tools or just maneuvering heavy materials, there are a host of things that could go wrong if you have a momentary lapse in concentration or misjudge something.
You may even need to contact experts for help with broken window glass repairs in Brighton if you’re really unlucky.
Although this may be putting you off the idea of carrying out any home improvements, there are a number of very good reasons to make alterations to your abode. The Bristol Post recently highlighted research from Canopies UK, which picked out the projects that can add the greatest value to your home.
Loft conversions and extensions were among the top options, adding an average of 14 per cent to the price of a property, but
